She was carrying her son Jan and they were accompanied by some Englishman and soldiers. The soldiers had to leave and Dirck ignored their warnings about returning Indians. Shortly after the soldiers heard a shriek, and returned, finding Dirck mortally wounded and his wife dead. Their son, Jan, was raised in New Amsterdam by Claesie Teunis.1
