Michiel Tades1

b. circa 1623, d. before February 1671
  • Michiel Tades was born circa 1623 at Witzwort, Eiderstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark (now Germany).2
  • He and Annetje Eduwarts, daughter of Eduard Dircksz and Jannetje Andries, married by intention on 18 November 1649 at Amsterdam, the Netherlands.2
  • Michiel Tades married second at Bergen, New Jersey, on 8 June 1668 Tryntje Jacobs (banns 17 May 1668, and recorded at RDC New York, 17 Jun 1668).3,4
  • Michiel Tades died before February 1671.
  • Also known as Michiel Tadens.2
  • Surname is also spelled Tadis.5
  • Michiel Tades is progenitor of the van Yderstein family, although that name does not appear until the third generation. He was in New Amsterdam before Jan 1644 when he made a declaration regarding a "fight with knives." He bought a house in New Amsterdam in 1652, and was banashed in 1656 for selling liquor to the Indians. He was permitted to live on Long Island. In 1657 he was assessed at the Ferry (in Brooklyn) 10 guilders towards the salary of Dom. Polhemius. At this time is yacht was making trips to the Delaware River. On 24 April 1659 he mortgaged his house on Pearl Street to pay a debt of 1,615 guilders owed to a merchant in Amsterdam for merchandise received, an issue that was followed by years of litigation. It appears that Michiel Tades was continuously in litigation of some sort. He bought 21 morgens of land on the East River in Brooklyn in 1660 and sold it in 1664. In 1661 he sold his yacht De Liefde. In 1662 he was accused of selling brandy to a soldier. In 1662 he also had legal troubles with Paulus Pieterszen over a boat, an issue in which their wives also became invovled with assaults on one another. In 1662 he bought a house on Pearl Street, and in 1663 was granted a license for a tap house in New Amsterdam. In 1664 he was fined 30 guilders when "drunken Indians were found on Sunday at his house." In 1664 he took the oath of allegiance to the English.6
  • He witnessed the baptism of Jacobus Pietersz Slot , son of Pieter Jansen Slot and Marritje Jacobse Van Wickle, on 17 February 1669 at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Bergen, (now Jersey City, Bergen Co., New Jersey), (sponsors Magiel Tades, Grietje Jacobs).7
