- He married first in 1812 Maria Lent, daughter of Henry Lent and Margaritta Montross.5
- John Thorp married second after 1832 Maria Blauvelt.6
- John Thorp died on 26 June 1868 at Westwood, Bergen Co., New Jersey.2
- He was buried at Old Hook Cemetery, Westwood, Bergen Co., New Jersey; in the Richard Hopper plot.2
- Shortly after their marriage, John Thorp enlisted for service during the War of 1812. He served as a private in the 9th Regt. New York Artillery (Militia) in Capt. Thomas C. Butler's Company. He was stationed in the forts of New York harbor. He received land warrants for his service. John and Maria lived at Peekskill, New York until about 1825, when his church membership was transferred from the Dutch Reformed Church at Cortlandt to the Presbyterian Church in Yorktown, Westchester Co., New York (date 6 Feb 1825). On 13 May 1827, John requested dismission from the Presbyterian Church with a "view of joining our bretheren in the Baptist Church of New York City." The Thorps lived in New York City for a short time before 1832 when John obtained a grant (due to his war service) for land at Spencer, Tioga County, New York. While living there, Maria died, and John moved to Washington Twp., Bergen Co., New Jersey and purchased several small farms near Westwood. He married again, his second wife also named Maria (her surname may be Hopper, as John is buried in the Richard Hopper plot at Old Hook Cemetery).
"John's second wife was much younger than he, a circumstance that may have contributed to a rift between John and his children by his first wife, except William, the youngest. This rift was due also to the fact that John's strictly orthodox religious views antagonized most of the older children. William remained closer to his father and became a Baptist preacher."2 - His will was dated on 29 February 1868 proved 6 July 1868. He passes over all of his children except son William and daughter Mary by his second wife. John's real estate was sold fpr $4000. It consisted of four tracts of land in Washington Twp., Bergen County. At the time the inventory was taken (27 March 1869) his widow, Maria, had already re-married.7

- Also known as Peter Tharp (pension papers).2
- He served during at the Revolutionary War. Peter enlisted on 20 Jan 1777 in the 3rd Regt., New Jersey Line and served for about two years. He applied for a pension on 1 April 1818 at Essex County, New Jersey. He received $8 per month. His application stated that he had received badges of merit but unfourtunately lost the papers.4,2
- "Peter and Jemima lived at Marlborough town for about five years; from 1790 to 1809 at Newburgh, New York, where they were members of the Old School Baptist Church; and in New York City where he taught school on Hudson St. for years where 'our beloved sister Jemima Thorp' was a member (6 Oct 1838) of the North Beriah Baptist Church."2
- On 13 July 1820 he wrote the pension board from Newark, New Jersey, stating that he was a resident of Rahway, New Jersey, was 61 years old on the 11 of June last and that for 25 years had been sorely aflicted with rheumatism and siatica. He says that he had formerly taught school but because of his weak eyes was forced to quit in 1818, after which time he took to mending shoes for his neighbors but could not follow it. He says that his wife Jemima was a cripple, the result of a fall from a horse by which she broke her collar bone, dislocated a shoulder and wrist, and now she was unable to do much work herself. He says that for many years they drew a pension, has been helped by public, but chiefly by private charity. With his pension he rents a small tenement for $20 a year, tends a garden, and by strict economy they live in a degree of comfort. An inventory of his possessions gives a total value of about $50.
On 28 Dec 1838, Jemima Tharp (signed by her mark) appeared before the Marine Court of New York City in order to obtain the benefit of a provision of the Act of 7 July 1838 entitled, "An Act of Congress granting half pay and pensions to certain widows." She supplied the date of her marriage and the date of her husband's death. On the same day, Henry C. Thorp introduced a leaf from the family Bible of Peter Tharp, deceased. The leaf gives the names and birth dates of ten children of Peter and Jemima Thorp.2
