    indicates that Sarah died 28 Feb 1803 and that John died 9 Nov 1798. John
    and Sarah had at least four children: (1) Elizabeth, m. Hartess Heron; (2)

  • He owned and resided on the island, called by the Indians Wynpaggue, containing about 90 acres of upland, located in the salt marshes of Flatlands, and at present (1878) known as Bergen's Island, the one half of which was devised to him by his father, and the remainder he purchased of the heirs of his brother Tunis. Cornelius was appointed ensign of the militia company of Flatlands on 17 March 1821, afterwards was lieutenant and elected coroner on 1825. In 1823 he was appointed justice of the peace.2

  • Hans Michielze Bergen was said to be baptized on 11 March 1689 (as stated by T. G. Bergen, but a record has not been found).1,2
  • He married Rachel Bensing, daughter of Dirck Benson and Tysje Claes.1
  • Hans Michielze Bergen died between 18 January 1731 and 20 June 1732; (dates of will and proving).
  • A baker, he resided near Brooklyn Ferry in Kings County, Long Island, New York.1
  • His will was dated on 18 January 1731 proved 20 Jun 1732. Leaves his estate to his wife Rachel during her widowhood; after her remarriage or death to his children, Michael, Fammike, Teunis, Derick, and Hanse.3,4,5
  • Teunis G. Bergen lists the children of Hans Bergen and Rachel Bensing on page 217 of The Bergen Family. There is an error, and other concerns in his account. Daughter Annetje (bapt. 12 Mar 1710, New York) is per the New York Reformed Dutch Church record, a daughter of Hans Berge(n) and Saartje Rapalje, Jur., and is not a child of this Hans Bergen and Rachel Bensing. Daughter Tiesje (or Fiesje) is stated to have been baptized at Brooklyn on 9 June 1711, but this record has not been found. She is not named in her father's will. The source for the birth dates of children Femmetje, Hans and Tunis is not given, but all three are mentioned in their father's will. Michael (Meighiel) and Derick, both have baptisms that are found in the records of the New York Reformed Dutch Church.6
