Elnathan Underhill1,2,3

b. between 1760 and 1761, d. 23 June 1845
  • Father*: Bartow Underhill4
  • Mother*: Sarah5
  • Elnathan Underhill was born between 1760 and 1761 at Cortlandt Manor, Westchester Co., New York.6
  • He married Hannah Brewer, daughter of Adolf Brouwer and Elisabeth Lassing, at Sunbury Co., New Brunswick, Canada, circa 1784.7,8
  • Elnathan Underhill died on 23 June 1845 at Port Ryerse, Ontario, Canada.3
  • He was buried at Baptist Cemetery, Vittoria, Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada.3
  • From Underhill Gen. v.4, p.219-20: "Elnathan Underhill, born in New York in 1757, married there a Brower, and later went to New Brunswick, and in 1825 to Port Reyerse in Ontario, where he lived, dying there in 1842. He had brothers, Philip and Jasper, and sisters Sarah, Patty and Tamar. The son Jasper married Hannah Oakes in 1824 and died Aug. 24, 1841, and had issue..."2
  • Elnathan Underhill is further covered and updated in Underhill Genealogy V:117 (1980). "There is a brief account of Elnathan among the unidentified Underhills in Vol. IV, pp. 219-20, but some of the dates given there are incorrect. He went to New Brunswick as a Loyalist at the end of the Revolutionary War, arriving Aug. 20, 1783, and on Jan. 26, 1784 was one of several men petitioning the Governor for land on Gaspereau Creek (Provincial Archives, Fredericton, N.B.). In Sept. 1785 he was among the applicants for land at Little River in Sheffield, Sunbury Co., N.B., at which time he was married and had one child. This settlement was organized by his brother-in-law Samuel Ryerse, whose lot #1 was next to Elnathan's lot #2, of 200 acres. He was living at Little River in 1789 when he witnessed a deed from Daniel Palmer to #314 Nathaniel Underhill.
The records of Rev. John Beardsley of the Anglican Church, Maugerville, N.B., show that on Feb 17, 1788 he baptized Elnathan Underhill, adult, as well as the infants John Underhill and Rebecca Ryerse. Some published accounts call this John Ryerse rather than Underhill, but the original records confirm that Underhill is correct, and from other evidence we know that this was Elnathan's eldest child.
On Sep. 27, 1809 Elnathan Underhill, yeoman of St. Marys, York Co., N.B., with the consent of his wife Hannah, sold his lot #2 at Little River to Jacob Baker (Sunbury Co. Deeds IJ:92). The exact date of his move to York Co. is not known. A petition in the Provincial Archives shows Elnathan seeking lots 49, 59 and 64 on the Keswick River; other petitioners were Cornelius and John Brewer, no doubt relatives of Hannah. About 1811, Elnathan petitioned for additional land on the Madamkeswick (Keswick) River, in behalf of his sons Jasper and Samuel, while eldest son John petitioned in his own right.
Elnathan removed to Upper Canada (Ontario), probably in 1822 or '23, accompanied by all his family except Samuel, who joined them some years later. There are no records of Elnathan's disposal of his N.B. property or his acquisition of land in his new home. Vol. IV states that he settled at Port Ryerse and died there, and when his daughter Martha was married in 1824 she was called of Woodhouse Twp., in which Port Ryerse is located. Subsequently, however, his sons are referred to as of Charlottesville, the next township to the west, which includes Vittoria where Elnathan and Hannah are buried. He also apparently owned Lot 5, Concession 2 of Walsingham Twp. (next west of Charlottesville), where several of his sons lived after his death.
The list of Elnathan's children has been reconstructed from numerous N.B. and Ontario records, and is believed to be complete."3

Jasper Underhill1,2,3

b. 24 June 1792, d. 24 August 1841
  • Jasper Underhill was baptized on 24 June 1792 at Maugerville, Sunbury Co., New Brunswick, Canada.3
  • He married Hannah Oakes at Upper Canada (Ontario) in 1824.3
  • Jasper Underhill died on 24 August 1841 at probably Walpole, Haldimand Co., Ontario, Canada.3
  • Jasper and his family are covered in Underhill Genealogy V:190-191. "On Oct. 26, 1815 Jasper and two others asked the N.B. Provincial authorities for grants of land on the (Madam) Keswick River, about two miles above the grant to the "late York Volunteers." He stated that he was single and 23 years of age, "born in this Province," and that he had obtained an allotment for land inNov. 1811 but was unable until now to ask for a grant. The 1811 petition of his brother John notes that Elnathan Underhill had petitioned for land for his sons Jasper and Samuel, who unlike John were under age. (Provincial Archives, Fredericton, N.B.).
On July 26, 1819 Henry Smith sold to Jasper Underhill of Miramichi, yeoman, for £315, lot #3 in the grant of the Guides and Pioneers, on the south side of the river Madamkeswick, bordering lot #4 of Adolphus Brewer, in all 200 acres. On the same date he obtained a mortgage for £65 on the same property, his brother John acting as witness (York Co., N.B. land records). In the Royal Gazette of May 6, 1823 is a notice that Jasper Underhill had left the Province, and as he owed a debt to Henry Smith, anyone knowing his whereabouts was to report it to the County Judge.
Jasper had gone to Upper Canada (Ontario), where he was married in 1824 and in 1825 witnesed his brother Abraham's deed to lot 8, concession 8, Walpole. The next year he bought the west half of the same lot from his brother John, as Abraham's heir, his brother-in-law Hammmon Oaks acting as witness. In 1833 his nephew George quit claimed his rights in the same property, of 100 acres.
From at least 1825 until 1833 Jasper was living in Charlotteville township, but subsequently removed to the Walpole property. Om March 31, 1855 his widow Hannah, and son Sylvester and his wife Margaret, all of Walpole, sold the same 100 acres to Edward McCarten, Sr. for £450 (deed doc. 3353, Cayuga, Ontario). The 1877 Halimand Co. atlas shows a widow Hannah Underhill and J. and S. Underhill all residing on lot 7, concession 7, Walpole."4

John Underhill1,2

b. 1785, d. between 1840 and 1850
  • John Underhill was born in 1785 at Maugerville, Sunbury Co., New Brunswick, Canada, (on 21 Sep 1811, he stated that he was age 26, born in this provence).2
  • He was baptized on 17 February 1788 at Maugerville, Sunbury Co., New Brunswick, Canada.2
  • He married Cynthia at New Brunswick, Canada, before 1812.
  • John Underhill died between 1840 and 1850 at Porter, Niagara Co., New York.2
  • John Underhill is covered in Underhill Genealogy V:189-190. On 21 Sep 1811 he petitioned the New Brunswick government for 300 acres on the south side of the Madamkeswick River, about a quater of a mile above the land petitioned for "by his father Elkanah (sic) Underhill for his sons Jasper and Samuel." He indicated that he had never received any land from the government and was "desirous to improve and cultivate a farm." Whether this petition was approved is not known. In 1812-13 he did acquire 1,400 acres on both sides of the Madamkeswick, being lots 49, 50, and 60-64 of the Grant to the late Corps of New York Volunteers. In 1819 he witnessed a mortgage obtained by his brother Jasper.3
  • On 3 February 1821 John Underhill conveyed to John Brewer lots 49 and 50 (granted to John Underhill in 1812). John and Cynthia Underhill are called of Queensbury (south side of the river), and John Brewer is called of Fredericton.2
  • On 20 August 1822 John Underhill conveyed to Cornelius Brewer and Jacob Brewer, his remaining lots granted in 1812-13. John Underhill is of St. Marys Parish (north side of the river), while Cornelius Brewer, Jr. and Jacob Brewer are of Queensbury. (Here the Underhill Genealogy V:189, makes the statement, "For all this property the Brewers, no doubt relatives of John's mother, paid £164." It must be noted that this relationship has not yet been proven. It hinges on the place of marriage of Hannah Brower to Elnathan Underhill.).2
  • Ezekiel Sloot, Jared Betts ask that John Brewer's petition for lots 49 and 50 be denied. John Underhill, late of Queensbury has left the province (and according to his father Elnathan Underhill "never to return"). He left debts behind to Sloot and Betts and they have claim to lots 49 and 50. They accuse John Brewer, Jr. of being underhanded in trying to obtain these lots when they have a claim against them.1
  • John Underhill apparently went to Upper Canada, Ontario in 1822. His son Alfred's obituary states that they went there when he was six (1822). John first appears as a resident of Crowland in Niagara District, living there in 1826 when he sold, as heir-in-law to his brother Abraham, the west half of the latter's property at Walpole to his brother Jasper. John then appears in the records on 27 Feb 1834, residing at Walpole, when he sold the n.e. quarter of 50 acres to his son George. He calls himself a yeoman, and the Underhill Genealogy states that his signature matches that of the signature on the 1811 land petition in New Brunswick. On 28 Mar 1838, John and George Underhill of Walpole sold the remainder of the lot, the s.e. quarter of 50 acres to Philip Boogner (Buchner). John Underhill then left Canada and settled in the border town of Porter, Niagara Co., New York. He is found there on the 1840 census, but is certainly deceased by 1850, when Cynthia Underhill is recorded as the head of household. There is no trace of the family in Porter in 1860.2
  • The list of his children may be incomplete.4
