  • On 8 July 1644 Egbert van Borsum, skipper of the yacht Prins Willem, appeared before Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New Netherland, who appoints and empowers Cornelis van Borsum, "the principal's brother," residing at Amsterdam, to demand and receive in his name from the principal's guardians all such effects as belongs in his name by inheritance from his deceased father, named (J)an van Bor(sum, and) his deceased mother, named Jannetje (A)rents, in their lifetime residing at Emden... Egbert van Borsum signs with his mark.10
  • In 1644 he was skipper of the Princ William, a ship trading between New Haven and New Amsterdam. He lived on Manhattan Island and in 1653 was called a "tavern-keeper." In the same year he took charge of the ferry to Brooklyn. On June 1, 1654 he secured the first least from the city for the exclusive right to ferry passengers across the river (to and from Brooklyn). On August 28, 1654 he received a patent for a lot on Long Island at the ferry landing, adjoining the land formerly belonging to Cornelis Dirksen Hooghlandt and William Jansen Thomassen, both of who had been the ferrymen prior to Egbert. In 1655 he built a ferry-house and tavern on this lot. On September 12, 1661 he sold his house at the ferry in New Amsterdam and likely took up residence on Brooklyn.11
  • A genealogy covering four to five generations (though likely incomplete) of descendants of Egbert van Borsum and Annetje Hendricks was publlished in 1895 and 1896 in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, volumes 26 and 27, by William Godan Ver Planck, titled, "Van Borsum-Hendricks, The First Church Marriage in New York, with a Genealogy of the Van Borsum Family."3
