  • Hendrick Van Dyck came from Utrecht to New Amsterdam about 1639/40, probably with his wife Divertje Cornelis (Botjagers). In March 1642 he was in command of the expedition against the Weskquaesgeeks in Westchester, and in 1644 with Capt. John Underhill against Long Island and Connecticut Indians. He returned to Holland, was commissioned Shout-fiscal on 28 June 1645, and returned to New Netherland with Gov. Pieter Stuyvesant. He served on the Council in New Netherland until 1652 when he was dismissed. In Sept. 1655 he killed an Indian woman whom he suspected of stealing peaches from his orchard. In revenge for the murder, the Indians invaded New Amsterdam, wounded Van Dyck and killed his neighbor Paulus Leenderszen van der Grist. Over the next three days the Indians killed over 100 inhabitants and carried off another 150 into captivity. The episode has become known as the "Peach Tree War."1
