Hendrick (or Nicholas) first settled in Richmond County (Staten Island) where he was a carpenter. He returned to New York City where he was elected constable in the West Ward, 29 Sep 1711. Later, on 18 Oct 1736, he was again elected to that office but this time he was absent at the swearing in and was disqualified because he was "not either a Freeman or Freeholder in the said Ward." - His will was dated on 26 March 1739 proved 17 May 1740. Nicholas (sic) Van Gelder, of Richmond county, carpenter, being sick. I leave to my wife, Fametie, during her life, all houses, lands and tenements. I leave to Ephraim Van Gelder all my wearing apparel. After the death of my wife I leave all estate in New York or Richmond County, to my four children, Ephraim, Hanah, Sophia Johnson, and Lydia Johnson. I appoint my son Ephraim, and my son-in-law, William Johnson, executors. Witnesses: Jacob Rachow, Adam Mott. Signed, Hendrick Van Gelder.8,9,10

- Jacob is said to be the first of the family to use the Van Gelder surname. At his second marriage he was styled as "Jacobus Evertse Van Gelder of Breukelen, widower of Diver Tyse." Shortly after his second marriage Jacob bought from Albert Zabriskie some land near the Red Mills at Arcola, Bergen Co., New Jersey. Following his third marriage he bought 168 acres of land in the Ramapo tract at Paramus, New Jersey, from the East Jersey Proprietors, and this was the site of the family homestead for several generations. His son Abraham inherited the land in Arcola and the other children the land in Paramus. He and his wife were twice witnesses at baptisms: 7 Feb 1720 for Hendrick, son of Johannes Brouwer and Antje Mandeville; also 13 Nov 1726, at that of Tjerck Van Deusen, son of Isaac Van Deusen and Elizabeth Roseboom. He was living as late as 1742 when on 23 Sep, he was listed among the "bonds and notes" in the inventory of the estate of Johannis Van Emburgh of Bergen County.

- "John learned the chair-making trade in the shop of Garret Van Gelder and in 1800 opened is own establishment at 86 Murray Street, New York City. At a meeting of the Common Council, 1 April 1805, he was appointed a substitute watchman in Capt. Lawrence's Company, and on July 15th of the same year, a regular watchman. Later John moved to a farm in Dingman's Ferry, Pennsylvania, then a frontier community on the Delaware River. He remained there until 1830 when he returned to New York City and for the next decade was agian engaged in the chair-making business. In the census of 1850 he and his wife are residents of Glen Cove; later she died and was buried at Sea Cliff, Long Island, and John went to live with his eldest son in New Durham, New Jersey."2
