Cornelis Anthonisz van Schlick1,2

b. circa 1604, d. 1676
  • Cornelis Anthonisz van Schlick was born circa 1604 (age 30 on 5 Apr 1634) probably at Breukelen (near Utrecht) in the Netherlands.3
  • He married an Indian woman (name unknown).4
  • Cornelis Anthonisz van Schlick died in 1676.4,5
  • Also known as Cornelis Theuniszen van Breukelen.3
  • Also known as Cornelis Antonissen Van Slyck (as the surname later came to be spelled).6
  • Alias "Broer" Cornelis; as he was called by the Mohawks.4
  • He came to New Netherland in 1634 by de Eendracht. Sailed from the Texel in the beginning of May 1634.7
  • On 5 April 1634 Cornelis Theuniszen van Breukelen entered in contract with Kiliaen van Rensselaer for employment at the colony of Rensselaerswyck for a period of three years commencing with his arrival.3
  • He sailed from Texel in early May 1634 aboard the Eendracht for contrated service at Rensselaerswyck. He was a carpenter and mason. His account with the colony begins on 12 Aug 1634. Before Oct 1636 he was in charge of a farm, which until 1648, he seems to have worked on shares. From 1648 to 1652 he was charged an annual rent of f600, and from 1652 to 1661 a rent of f500. It appears that he occupied the same farm during these years, apparently located some distance north of the fifth, now Patroon's, creek and adjoined to the farm called de Vlackte, later known as Schuyler Flatts. Between 1643 and 1648 he spent much of his time at the Manhatans. On 6 Aug 1646, de Hooges urges him to come up river to see how the harvest is coming, and suggests that he might come to the colony at least once a year to look after his farm. While at the Manhatans, on 22 Aug 1646, he received from Dir. Kieft a patent for land at Catskill, in return for his service in bringing about a general peace and ransoming prisoners held by the Indians. He was appointed the patroon's voorspraecke (representative) on 12 May 1639, and filled the office jointly with Arent van Curler and Pieter Cornelisz until the arrival of van der Donck in 1641. On 23 Sep 1650 he was chosen to go with van Curler and others on an embassy to the Maquaes, and in 1658, 1660 and 1661 he was a member of the court of the colony.7
  • "By reason of his eminent services rendered in bringing about peace with the natives, he received a patent for a large tract of land at Catskil." He also owned land at Cohoes.4
