Joost Vredenburgh1,2

b. 1 January 1699
  • Joost Vredenburgh was baptized on 1 January 1699 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, witnesses Isaac de Mill, Judith Verney, h.v. van Johannes Joosten.3
  • He married Magdalena Brouwer, daughter of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Caljer, at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 26 June 1725 (banns 11 Jun 1725).4
  • Joost Vredenburgh is said to have married Magdalena Brouwer, daughter of Jacob Brouwer and Annetje Bogardus, William J. Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:28) argues against this claim, stating, "According to some authorities, she (Magdalena Brouwer) married Joost Vredenburg, but the names of their children point to Vredenburg's wife being the daughter of Nicholas Brouwer, and I have shown her as such. Other authorities, among these the Hill Manuscript at the N.Y. Gen. and Biog. Society, show this Magdalena to have married John Drake."5
  • Surname is also spelled Vredenburg.6
  • Joost Vredenburgh witnessed the baptism of Helena Reyn , daughter of Jan Frederic Reyn and Magdalena Brouwer, on 29 July 1722 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Utrecht, Kings Co., New York, (sponsors Joost Vredenburgh, Jannetje Brouwer).7
  • Joost Vredenburgh witnessed the baptism of Elizabeth Parsell , daughter of John Parsell and Lysbet Brouwer, on 6 March 1726 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Joost Vredenburg, Magdalena Vredenburg).8
  • Joost Vredenburgh witnessed the baptism of Rachel de Mill , daughter of Joost de Mill and Margrietje Willemsze, on 11 May 1726 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (witnesses Joost Vredenburg, Judith Ver Wey, Wedw., Van Johans, V. Seysen).9
  • Joost Vredenburgh witnessed the baptism of Joseph Taylor , son of Joseph Taylor and Gerretje Van Velse, on 29 November 1727 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Joost Vredenburg, Magdalena Brouwer, s.h.v.).6
  • In the past Joost has been given other Magdalena Brouwers as his wife, by various authorities. They are in error. Hoffman (TAG 24:164-5) shows Joost's wife as Magdalena Brouwer, daughter of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Colyer. His arguments for this connection are sound. His children were named Nicolaes, Jannetje and Isaac according to the Dutch custom of that time for their grandparents. Joost and his wife Magdalena act as sponsors for a child of her sister Lysbet.
