  • Barent Jansz Blom was born in 1611 at Stockholm, Sweden.2

  • For some time he was overseer of Van Twiller's farm on Ward's Island. He was known as "Groot Barent," the Barent of huge proportions. He removed to Brooklyn in 1652, after van Twiller was discharged by the government.2
  • On 23 January 1652 Barent Jansen bought of Peter Linde, twenty morgens of land on the shores of Long Island between the lands of Andries Hudde and Claes Jansen Ruyter, near Wallabout, where he lived until his death. Great Barent's Island and Little Barent's Island are named for him.2

All my other lands and tenements in Jamaica are to be sold by my executors. I leave to my wife two of my best beds, with bedding and furniture, and my Bilstead cupboard, and all linnen, an oval Bilstead table, and chairs, pewter plates, and brass kettles. All the rest of my estate to be turned into money and be put at interest for the support of my wife and the education and bringing up of my children, Sarah, Millicent, Tabitha, Silvester, Benjamin, Isaac, and Elizabeth.
