The first list contains about 380 names contained on eight pages numbered from 92515 to 92522 and dating from 26th April 1795 to 25th July 1795. The second set is three lists contained on four pages numbered from 95964 to 95967 and dating from 26th July 1795 to 25th October 1795 and then from 26th July 1796 to 25th January 1797. Further, it is not clear why these two sets of documents were in the papers of different petitioners and whether others may yet be found in other locations. The second set of documents is not in chronological order so be careful when reading dates."

Moses Westover1

b. 24 March 1744, d. 23 November 1826
  • Moses Westover was born on 24 March 1744 at Sheffield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts.1
  • He married Elizabeth Holmes, daughter of John Homes and Rachel Fellows, at Sheffield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, on 2 December 1767.1
  • Moses Westover died on 23 November 1826 at Sutton, Brome Co., Quebec, Canada.2
  • He was buried at Pettes Cemetery (also called Aseltine Cemetery), Sutton, Brome Co., Quebec, Canada.2
  • He served during at the Revolutionary War. In the 3rd Co., 1st Regt., Berkshire Co. Militia, 11 Jul 1776. He was a private in Capt. Enoch Noble's Co., Col. John Ashley's Regt., Berkshire Co. Moses entered service on 1 Aug 1777 and was discharged 20 Aug 1777. The Company marched to Bennington, Vermont by order of Brig. Gen. Fellows and the Committee of Saftey at the request of Gen. Stark.3,4
  • "Moses Westover settled in North Sutton (the area of Quebec then known as the Eastern Townships, or Canada East) in 1796. He was a Loyalist to the British during the American Revolution and fled from his home in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Previous to North Sutton, he lived at Coldwell Manor. For his loyalty to the crown, he was granted lots of land located in both Stanbridge and in Sutton, which is were he settled. His son Stephen resided on his homelot in Sutton after his death, and grandsons Roswell and Stephen did as well."5
  • A number of published articles regarding the Westover family of Brome County, Quebec, have stated that Moses was a Loyalist. However, there is no primary evidence available to confirm that Moses actually served as a Loyalist. Moses did serve in the Berkshire Co. Militia in 1776, and his name appears on the roll of the 3rd. Co., 1st Regt. He is not found in any roll of Loyalist Companies. His name, "Moses Westover, on Caldwells Manor N. of Line, "No Corps," does appear on the list of 381 names who signed the Oath of Allegiance to the King in Dec. 1786, in which he states he has been in Canada since 1785. Apparently Moses "switched" sides during, or at the end, of the Revolution.
  • Moses Westover was granted lot 16 of range 10 (east of Sutton Junction) in the Township of Sutton when that township was granted in 1802.6
  • From Loyalists of the Eastern Townships of Quebec: "Moses Westover was from Sheffield, Mass. He settled first at Caldwell's Manor but "no corps." He may have served in a non-incorporated corps. He was later a Sutton grantee, where land was granted only to Known Loyalists. He isshown as 'Moses Westover the Elder' on the list of Stanbridge Township grantees in 1801. Moses, along with George Fitch, were the first two Masons initiated into the Select Surveyors' Lodge, which was formed in the Townships in 1795. His son Stephen, born 1786, was a surveyor, practising in Brome and Missisquoi as well as in Montreal."7
  • His will was dated in 1809 and is in the Brome County Historical Society Archives. He gives to his son Stephen 150 acres of his home lot, with another 50 acres given to grandson Samuel, son of Amasa, deceased. The other six sons each to receive 15 Spanish Milled dollars, which Stephen is to distribute two years after Moses' death. His widow is to remain in the home, supported by Stephen. Samuel is to be given a milch cow of a middling size and value and a new and decent suit of clothes ifhe shall stay at home and work until he has attained the age of 21.8,9
  • On 21 Oct 1826, Moses Westover, "in consideration of the paternal regard and affection which he bears towards his grandchildren Roswell and Stephen Egbert, minor, issue of the marriage of his son Stephen Westover, deceased, with Dorinda Ball..." deeded to Dorinda as their guardian the three fourths part of Lot 15, range 10, Sutton, containing all the residue after taking out one equal fourth part in the N.W. corner which he had previously bequeathed to his son John Westover, and "saving and excepting about half an acre...to be reserved for a burial ground."10
