Matthys Bovy1

  • James L. Hanson (1991) suggests that Mathieu Bovie of New York may be Mathieu Boifils, a laborer from the Isle de Ré who signed on as an engage, or indentured servant, at La Rochelle, France, on 17 April 1678 to work for three years at a wage of 90 1. a year for Montreal merchant and trader Jacque Leber, uncle of Anne (Leber) (Barrois) Lootman, the mother of Mathieu's wife, Catherine Barrois.4
  • He first appears in New York as "Mathys, a Frenchman" when he was sued by Barent Myndertse in 1683 for unpaid debts. On 8 Sep 1684 Jacob Sanders informed the court that a certain Frenchman named Matthys had threatened to poison his "negress," Pey. The Frenchman, Matthys Boffie, appeared and acknowledged that he had slept with the Pey for two years and that he had one child by her and she was pregnant with a second. Witnesses testified that Boffie had threatened that, if Sanders would not sell Pey to him for 50 or 60 beavers, he would get a root from the woods, give half to his lover, and take the other half himself and both would die on Sander's door. Boffie was ordered to be jailed until the next court session. On 11 April 1685 the court heard the testimony of Franceyn, the negress of Jacob Staets, as well as the testimony of Pey and several other negroes and negresses of Schenectady who added the charge that "Matthys Boffie, a Frenchman, a vagrant fellow of no settled habitation," tried to "entice and Inveagle" them to run away to Canada. The sheriff was ordered to confine Boffie and produce him before the court of Oyer and Terminer (Court Min. Albany 3:480-81, 526-28). No further record of the case has been found.
    In 1689 the Albany Court of Sessions ordered that "Mathys Boffie who lives at Canastagioene be ordered to come and live here in town." After daughter Catarina was baptized in Albany on 12 Feb 1690, Matthys and his wife, Catherine Barrois, next appear in New Jersey where son Nicholas was baptized at Bergen.
