Re: Item 3. See reference to this item within item 4
Re: Item 4.
4. Henry Crofton (Staveley) (4091) only had one sister whose name started
with L and that was Letitia or Letty. Does it look anything like that? Letitia (4160)
married Robert George Young (4161) in 1858, 6 years after Henry Crofton (Staveley)
(4091) went to Australia. Lititia's (4160) first son George Lawrence Young
(4162) was born in 1859 and since he is about 2 in this photo, that would date the photo
to about 1861 when Letitia was aged 20. [Item] 2 and [Item] 3 could conceivably be be her husband Robert Young
(4161) since they are placed in proximity? [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001,
quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 5.
5. This is Robert IV [Staveley] (4090) I think. If the photo was
taken April 10th 1863, then Robert III [Staveley] (4077) was dead, Robert
IV [Staveley] (4090) was 35 and Robert V [Staveley ]
(4177) was 6 years old. I have a photo of Robert IV [Staveley] [4090]
when he was a very old man but I can see a likeness, certainly the pattern of baldness is
the same. cf #107. (It is uncanny how much Robert IV [Staveley]
(4090) looks like my cousin Glen Manley of New Zealand. And yet we are so
distantly related to them.). [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis
(4515)].
Re: Item 6.
6. I think this is Reginald George Staveley (4664), b 1864, Ballarat,
Australia, d 4 Aug. 1928, Timaru, N Z. m (1) 1 Dec. 1886, Wellington, to Emily Maude Pitts
(4657), b c. 1842. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
He was the son of George [Staveley] (4184) and Sarah nee Kimber
(4619) who was somewhat distantly related to Henry Crofton (Staveley)
(4091). However he has pictures of Reginald's brother Edmund George Staveley
(4620) from Christchurch NZ in his collection so they must have known the whole family.
The reason they did know them I think was because their father was the son of Rev. Edmund Stevelly
(3967) (1790 - 1841) of Cork who was a nephew of Robert II [Staveley]
(3411). The later generations of Robert III [Staveley] (4077) and [Robert
Staveley] IV (4090) being also clerics in the church of Ireland, they
would have met up through their work. the reason I think the photograph is Reginald [G. Staveley]
(4664) is because that whole family flitted between Geelong and London. Sarah nee Kimber
(4619) was returning to Australia with all the children in 1862 and it seems as soon as
her husband died in 1873, she took all the children, except perhaps the eldest son Edmund
George [Staveley] (4620), back to London. In 1874 Reginald Staveley
(4664) would have been aged 10 having his photo taken in Notting Hill, London. Confirmed
by Peter Staveley (7370) in Canada that the children were in London at
this time. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].

Peter R. [Staveley (7370) thinks that this is
George [Staveley (4184) and Sarah [Kimber (4619)].
[e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 14 Feb. 2001]
Re: Item 10. Peter R [Staveley (7370], from
Canada, thinks this maybe one of George [Staveley (4184) and Sarah's [Kimber
(4619)] daughters. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 14 Feb. 2001]

13. One of your Day relatives (and mine). I have just been looking at the
Day family tree and was very surprised to see that the original matriarch
of the Day family was none other than Ellinor daughter of Thomas Hodder
of Ballea Castle County Cork. I am a descendant of the Hodders of Cork
and so I am related to you in more ways than one! [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug.
2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 14.
Re: Item 15.
15 Photographer J. Botterill 19 Collins street East Melbourne who according to my book
called "The Mechanical Eye in Australia by Alan Davies and Peter Stanbury was in
business there from the years 1867 - 1874. But more likely to be 1870 - 1874 because
before that he was in partnership with someone named Dunne at the same address. So that
means the man in the photo was born about 1830 - 1836. The only ones that fit that and
were anywhere near Melbourne at that time is either Henry Crofton [Staveley]
(4091) or George [Staveley] (4184) (Newbold [Staveley]
(4185) was dead by then) But since they were cousins, they could have looked alike.
(Compare this to Illustrious George [Staveley] taken in 1867 and there
are similarities. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 17.
17. When Margaret Collis nee Day (4071) married Robert
II [Staveley] (3411) in 1795, she was the widow of John Fitzgerald Collis
(4072), Dublin and she already had children by this previous marriage, half brothers
and/or sisters of Robert III [Staveley] (4077). This man looks about 50
years old in 1870 which means he could be one of Margaret's grandchildren. It should be
possible to find out all about him since you have the details of his career in the church.
[e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 18.
18. Morgan Singer R N (4181) was the brother of Sarah Letitia Singer
(4176) who was the wife of Robert IV [Staveley] (4090). He was a vice
admiral I think and this must be his wife (--?--) (--?--) (4310).
The Rev. Henry Crofton (4083) was married twice. His first wife was Susan [Crofton] (4084)
, daughter of Duke Crofton (4086)., of Lakefield. They had a daughter Mary (4085) who
married J. H. Singer (4178). Their daughter was Sarah Letitia Singer (4176) who married
Robert IV [Staveley] (4090).
The Rev. Henry Crofton (4083) then married his second wife Frances ffolliott
(4088) of Hollybrook and among other children they had two daughters, Sarah Francis
[Crofton] (4082 ) and and Letitia Crofton (4089). Letitia [Crofton]
(4089) was the grandmother of Helen ffolliot (4195) who married Robert V
[Staveley] (4177). Letitia [Crofton] (4089) was the
daughter of the above Morgan Singer (4181), brother of Sarah Letitia [Singer]
(4176), who was wife of Robert IV [Staveley] (4090). Lots of research
needed here to sort it out.
[e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].

Re: Item 22.
Re: Item 23.
23. I don't know whether you are aware of this or not but this is William Smith O'Brien
MP (4289) the Irish rebel who was arrested for his part in a rebellion in 1848 (in fact he
was the ring leader) and was transported to Tasmania, Australia as a result (1849 - 1853).
He (4289) returned to England later. W S O'Brien (4289) was related to us
in that his mother was Charlotte nee Smith (4051) who was the daughter of
William Smith (4050) and his wife Grace nee Staveley
(4036) who was the sister of Robert II [Staveley] (3411) and George [Staveley]
(3390) (my ancestor). W S O'Brien (4289) was the son of Sir Edward O'Brien
M P (4287) Baron of Inchquin and they lived at the large Dromoland castle which is now a
luxury hotel. Charlotte (4051) his mother had a big hand in designing and building it.
W S O'Brien 4289) was eventually pardoned and returned to Ireland.
All this was going on while George, Newbold and Henry Crofton were growing up and may have
influenced their immigration to Australia.

Re: Item 27.
27. Henry Crofton is always known as Henry Crofton R. N.
(7427) in anything I have read about him so perhaps the R. A. is R. N.? Royal Navy.

Re: Item 28.
28. Johnstone, Shaunessy & Co, 3 Bouke Street, East Melbourne were in business from

Re: Item 31.
31. Same lady as [Item] #7, both taken in Paris. [e-mail Lisa
Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 32.
32. The photographers Perry were at 57 Collins street only from 1865 - 1867. If this young
man is in his 20s, then he must have been born between 1845 - 1857. So this must be the
second generation, perhaps either Edmond George Staveley (4620) b 1855
(compare with the photo of him in Merle's book, no likeness
though much older in the book) or alternatively Henry Crofton's (4091) eldest Henry
Fitzgerald Crofton Staveley (4097) b 1857.
[e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].

Re: Item 35.
35. Compare with [Item] #21 taken at the same photographers.
That was Ernest Crofton Sadlier so this might be one of his little sisters, Evelyn or
Isabela Blanche perhaps. If we assume that they seem to never use the same photographer
twice, then 21 and 35 were probably taken at the same time. In which case. [e-mail Lisa
Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 37.
37. The uniform is similar to that worn by Henry Crofton (7427) in [Item] #27. Try and find out something about this tricornered
hat, looks very like Nelson's hat i.e. Royal Navy. Aldershot was the military headquarters
in London but I thought for the Army. Robert V [Staveley] (4177) was
based there but this is not Robert V [Staveley]. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001,
quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 38.
38. Pick out all the ones taken at the photos taken at Johnstone O'Shaunessy & Co, 3
Bouke St, east Melbourne as they may be the family group Henry, Maria and their children
taken during the period 1865 - 1886. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae
Lewis (4515)].
[Item] #21. Ernest Crofton Staveley (4101).
[Item] #28. Henry his father [Staveley] (4091)?
[Item] #35. girl 4-5 years old Evelyn [Staveley] (4105) or Isabella Blanche [Staveley] (4107).
[Item] #65. I think this girl is more like 20 years old. One of Henry's [Staveley] (4091)? elder daughters?
[Item] #66. Maria nee Langton (4094)?
[Item] #90.
[Item] #110. We know #21 was Ernest [C. Staveley] (4101) and taken by the same photographer as this one, possibly at the same time. Therefore this might be his elder brother Henry Fitzgerald Crofton Staveley (4097).

in Innishowen reference I gave you. He is the son of Margaret Staveley
nee Day's brother The Rt. Reverend Bishop of Cashel married 1852. But there was another
who was the grandson of Margaret Staveley nee Day's
other brother Rev. John Day Rector of Kiltallagh, Co Kerry. This Rev.
Maurice Day was Bishop of Clogher but would have been a younger
generation. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae Lewis (4515)].
Re: Item 71.
71 & [Item] 74. Same dress alright, there must
have been a shortage. Same photographer who was not a Melbourne photographer. Is this the
Lawrence girls, Kathleen and Margaret Letitia Lawrence? But Margaret was born 21 Feb 1863
so in 1884 would have been 20 years old which this girl ain't! More like about 7 - 10
years old, i.e. it was taken 1874? [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 13 Aug. 2001, quoting Kae

Re: Item 84.
Re: Item 85. I found the following on the internet -
On LDS there is a record of Morgan Thomas Crofton b. 6 Oct 1766 at St. Bride, Dublin F. Morgan Crofton (Sir) M. Jane D'Abzac. In looking at the handwritting on
the back of photo # 85 it is quite possible that the spelling as per LDS is correct. I
have interpreted it as ' D'Abyee' - it has obviously been written with the long ' z' and
the 'ee' as I look at it now, could most certainly be 'ac'. Therefore, I now feel
confident that Abyee - should be Abzac. [e-mail Lisa Lambert (6816) 16 APr. 2002, to

to a much older photo of Edmond (4620) in Merle's book don't
you think? I suggest you write to Edmond's descendant now living in Christchurch to see if
she has any photos of them at an earlier age Jan [Still Living] (4957), Christchurch

identified photo [Item] #83. Or Henry Staveley Lawrence
and his son George Napier Lawrence. With [Item] #89 being
George Lawrence Snr. (4148). These men were both very famous and I would
be surprised if there weren't photos of them in the public record somewhere. next time you
