Charles H. Benton Browning Charles enlisted in the War Between the States October 10, 1861 in Trousdale, TN; and mustered into service in Nashville, TN, by Lieutenant Hurst for a period of 12 months. A Pvt. in Company E. 32nd Tennessee Infantry.  Charles also appears on a Company Muster Roll as a Pvt. in Company K, 5th Tennessee Regimental Provisional Army for May and June 1862. Capt. Bradford last paid him to the time of April 20, 1862. According to his military service record, he died May 30, 1862 at Columbus, Mississippi. It is possible that Charles is buried in a Confederate Mound at Columbus.

Samuel Browning - After his older brother Charles H. Benton Browning had died in the War Between the States, Samuel enlisted at the age of 23 in Company F. 4th Regiment, Russell's Alabama Cavalry at Huntsville, AL on 8 September 1863. He was enlisted by Captain O. B. Gaston for a period of three years or the duration of the war, was mustered into service on 11 September 1862 at Taylor's Store, TN. He was captured at Parker's Cross Roads, Murfressboro, TN on 31 December 1862, and sent to the Prison Camp at Camp Douglas, IL. On 27 January 1863 Samuel was admitted to the post hospital with measles and died three days later on 30 January 1863. According to his Military Prison records, he was buried in a Confederate Mound in Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

  Organized at Helena, Arkansas, July 20, 1862.  Attached to District of Eastern Arkansas and duty at Helena, AR until October.  Moved to St. Louis, MO, and duty at Benton Barracks, MO until December.  Mustered out December 31, 1862.

August(as) Alexandar Browning   Pvt. Co. A, 1st Bn, AR Inf.  Enlisted 10 June 1862 in Independence Co., AR for 6 months.  Age 32.  Mustered out 31 Dec. 1862 at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO  (Born in SC)

Williamson Browning Jr.  Pvt. Co. D, 1st Bn, AR Inf.  Enlised 1 July 1862 at Jacksonport, AR (Near present day Newport)  Age 27.  Died 19 Oct. 1862 at Helena, AR  (Born in TN)

William Browning  Pvt. Co C, 1st Bn, AR Inf.  Enlisted 10 June 1862 at Van Buren, AR.  Age 33.  Died 19 Oct. 1862 at Helena, AR.  (Born in TN)

John Browning  Pvt.  Co. ?, 1st Bn, AR Inf.  Age 19  (Born in SC)

Two of the four companies were led by Independence County men from Black River Twp.  Company A was under Captain Hiram V. Gray (who was a neighbor of Angustas and Williamson.  Williamson was single and lived with his brother and family).  The men enlisted in June and July of 1862, when Batesville was occupied the first time and traveled with Gen. Samuel R. Curtis to Helena.  Numbers of men sickened and died in camp there.  The remaining men were sent to Benton Barracks in St. Louis where 1st Lt. Elijah James of Co. C died November 14, and Capt. Hiram V. Gray died on December 2.  Nearly one hundred and fifty men died during the six months they spent in service.  The regiment mustered out on December 31, 1862.

George Washington Browning  b. Oct. 23, 1839 in Henry Co., TN d April 5, 1885 in Batesville, Independence Co., AR.  1st Lt. Co. H., 8th Army Regiment of the Confederacy.

This unit was organized at Jacksonport in the summer of 1861 by William K. Patterson who commanded it until reorganization after the Battle of Shiloh in the spring of 1862.  The next commander, John H. Kelly, wounded at Murfreesboro, TN, was succeeded by Lt. Col. G. F. Baueum who served until wounded at Atlanta,  With the then Lt. Col. Anderson Watkins killed in the same battle, it is unknown who led the shattered regiment until its surrender with Gen. Joe Johnston in North Carolina on April 26, 1865.

A ceremony was held at Sulphur Rock Cemetery in Sulphur Rock, AR in which a marble military marker was dedicated at the grave of 1st Lt. George W. Browning.  The ceremony was sponsored by the Independence County Historical Society.

Browning, Duran O., Private, K Co, 14 Oct 61 at South Carrollton, KY. Transferred to H Co on 1 Jan 62. Jan-May 62 sick at Nashville, TN. Discharged 30 May 62 at Nashville, TN due to disability. Discharge certificate states disability due to pulmonary infection and diarrhea. At discharge was 5 ft 10 in, light complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, farmer and born in Muhlenberg Co, KY. [Final resting place at Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Sacramento, KY.]

Browning, Wiley, Private, H Co, 22 yrs, 4 Oct 61 at South Carrollton, KY. Discharged 24 Apr 62 at Shiloh, TN due to disability. Discharge certificate states disability due to blindness and bad hearing. Soldier was in good health at enlistment, but already blind in left eye and had slightly bad hearing which has increased. At discharge was 5 ft 4 in, dark complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, farmer and born in Muhlenberg Co, KY. Annotation of died 12 May 62 at Benton Barracks, MO of chronic diarrhea as a result of typhoid.

Browning, William, Private, H Co, 22 yrs, 28 Sep 61 at South Carrollton, KY. May-Jun 62 sick at Nashville, TN. Discharged 10 Jul 62 at Nashville, TN due to disability. Discharge certificate states disability due to chronic diarrhea and phthisis (tuberculosis). At discharge was 5 ft 8 in, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, farmer and born in Muhlenberg Co, KY.
