POUND, Va. � John Carlyle Browning, 75, died Saturday (March 10, 2001) at St. Mary�s Hospital.
He was born in Dickenson County, Va., on March 3, 1926. He was the son of the late Tivis and Lena (Powers) Browning.
He was a retired coal mining operator. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and two years in the paratroopers. He enjoyed hunting and car races. Most of all, he enjoyed his children and grandchildren; each visit was a pleasure.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Berlin Browning, Letcher Browning, and Gerald Browning; and a sister, Christine Mullins.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Virginia (Hartsock) Browning; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Laverne and James Sumner, Teresa Louise and Edward Wigginton; sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton Lyle and Sandra Browning, William Lee and Shelia Browning, Jeffrey Lynn Browning; sisters, Eunice Dotson, Barbara Mullins, Bessie Hill, Lucille Mullins, all of Clintwood, Va., Clersie Shortof, Salem, Va., and Rose Ann Apple, Bumpass, Va.; eight granddaughters; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Baker Funeral Home, Pound, Va.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Lynn Vanover officiating.
Burial will be in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Nephews and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
