Dear Ancestor
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone,
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist.
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.

The records you will find here are all related to the Browning Family. The goal of this site is not only to provide names and dates but source material proving the information provided.

The databases here are not necessarily of a direct line of Browning's but rather any record that contains the Browning surname. It is hoped that in time we can link many of the resources here to their appropriate family.

As with all internet information these sources should be used as a guide only, spelling errors are to be expected. One of my future projects will be to add scanned images of actual documents to this site.

I have posted my GEDCOM file on Rootsweb, this does not contain all the information I have on the Browning family but rather is my effort to start all over to ensure their is sufficient source info for all data. This GEDCOM was last updated on Aug 5, 2001

Browning is an English patronymic name from the Old English given name Bruning , which was originally a patronymic form of the name Brun , a nickname that referenced something brown, like brown hair, brown complexion, or brown clothing. The son of Brun was sometimes called Bruning, which occasionally evolved into Browning (as did the vocabular word brun brown) Brauning is the German cognate. Bruning (with an umlaut -u) is the Low German form. Bruning is the Dutch form. Bruynincks is the Flemish patronymic form.

If you would like to contribute a record to the file please email

Source material highlighted here has no significance this is for my records only.
