The above
John was the son of Thomas Nicol, tenant of Auchterflow, Avoch
Ross & Cromarty and Christian Urquhart of Kinkell Ross & Cromarty.
Thomas, born in September 1799, had parents John Nicol, born
circa 1770, in Resolis and, at time of
his marriage to Ann Bain, of Redcastle in August 1791, was also a
farmer of Auchterflow. In turn, John was the son of
David Nicol & Janet Bremner.
John, born Avoch 1833, first married Margaret MacDonald in 1856 & had
children Donald & Isabella. His wife, Margaret, died of Typhoid in
1861.
Donald
married with no Children became
a chauffeur to the doctor in Fortrose,
Isabella
married William Junor and had children Jessie, Donald, Margaret &
Catherine.
Donald migrated to Canada, was married and known to have had at least one
child, also Donald. William & Isabella moved to Dunkeld where William
worked on the railways.
With his second wife Christina Cameron he had seven children, Hannah
Margaret,
Thomas, Charles,, Christina, Marjorie, John & Alexander Cameron.
Thomas migrated
to Australia in 1899, and Alexander and Charles to Canada shortly
after, circa
1908. Charles was a bachelor and died in Vanderhoof BC Canada in 1960
It must
have been heart breaking for John & Christina to have said "Good-bye" to
three of their children knowing that they would never see them again.
Marjorie trained as a nurse in
Edinburgh, had one son John Ross,
Hannah Margaret married Joseph McLennan of Fortrose on 03
April 1903. They had no children.
After John's death in 1913 Christina moved to Inverness & is
noted on her son Alexander's Army Records in Canada in 1916 as his next of
kin living at 17 Greig Street, Inverness only a few minutes walk from her
daughter Christina.
