Note from Nick: From 1789 onwards, the burial records were "inspected" on 1st October each year by (Mr. John) Brutton. This practice stopped after 1794. Nick noted that he put "Mr. John" in brackets because his name is written as a flamboyant signature each time and so he could not make out the first name - looks like "Jn" which makes Nick think it's John. However, VERY definitely Brutton. We will investigate further - for this would mean that this Brutton was "important indeed" (within the church.) - nm

Legal Case of Burge v. Brutton: interesting read. Daughter Margaret inherited from father an estate still in probate and a real legal snarl that involved the Brutton & Ford legal partnership - John being unable to work (1821) because of a "paralytic attack" (stroke?) - complicated but very very interesting - and is used even today as precedent. Need to transcribe in entirety. Will do. - rhg
