atti
di morte
All
Saints Day is one of the most important holidays of the year in
Italy and, as is customary on that day, everyone visits the
cemetery to pay
respect
to
their
lost
loved ones. Like all Italian
activities, this one is social in nature. While the mood is
reflective, it is by no means somber and the air is filled with
the sounds of people
visiting
and
greeting one another
warmly. So many
people visit that, even in a small town like Loreto,
special bus services are arranged to shuttle people to and from
the cemetery. The graves in Italy are mostly above ground and, of
course, family members are buried together. There seems to be a
protocol for burial with the patriarch of the family on the
bottom, then his wife above. The oldest son is often buried with
his mother, and his wife is buried with his father. The cemetery
in Loreto is fairly new, having opened in 1932. When the bodies
were moved from the original location,
many of them were not given
individual graves.
For
whatever
reason,
many
of
the
bodies
were
placed together in a mass grave which
today is
located
below the central courtyard of the cemetery. This is the
final resting place of Ilario and Levina Buccella, Domenico's
father and daughter. The dead are
never forgotten in Italy, nor will they be forgotten in America.
Ci ricordiamo sempre Levina
Buccella.
