Note from Terry Jenkins:
Wanted to point out something to you on the John Buce/Rutha Smith page. The William Porch who married Susan A. Canada is a different William than then one who married Narcissus Gray. Narcissus husband was a nephew of the William Porch who married Susan Canada. Just a little info that you might find amusing, Susan Canada and Narcissus Gray were first cousins, their mothers being McBurnett sisters. Also, to further muddy the waters, their McBurnett mothers were daughters of Thomas McBurnett and Sarah SMITH, who just happened to be a sister to Rutha Smith BUCE!!! Samuel Gray's first wife was another daughter of Thomas and Sarah Smith McBurnett. Ok, too much info. LOL.

* Kay Davis writes: John (BUCE) Bruce Sr. was probably the son of Ambrose Bruce who m. Nancy Bryant - b. 8 Nov. 1793 in Bedford Co, VA.. Ambrose Bruce was the son of William Bruce. Some of this is secondary resource, part by family tradition, and part conjecture on my part. Many birthdates are from census records. Reportedly the Bruce name was changed to Buce because of religious persecution issues. The line supposedly traces back to Robert the Bruce who if I recall was a Scottish royal who was a Protestant leader and pulled away from the Catholic church. Sorry but I'm a little fuzzy on the history.
