Welcome to my Bury Parish pages. The aim is to provide information that may be useful to folks researching their ancestors from the Bury area.
I am starting by concentrating on listing the Churches and their records. Click on Bury Churches on the left or above to see these pages.

Religious History
The three Parish Churches in the area of St Mary's, Bury, St Mary's Radcliffe and St Mary's Prestwich are known to survive from at least the 12th century.
The area was a centre of Puritan dissent in the 17th century. In 1662 after much upheaval both during and after the Civil War dissenting ministers were expulsed. However in the 1690's non-conformist dissenting Chapels were allowed to be established. Bass Lane, Walmersley, Dundee Lane near Ramsbottom, Ainsworth were the first followed by Bank St, Bury in 1719.
Many dissenting congregations split in the 18th century over doctrinal differences. This led to the founding of new chapels such as Stand Lane in 1792 when Stand Presbyterian became Unitarian.
After 1770 the Methodists became established their first Chapel being at Pits o'th Moor, and a Wesleyan Methodist Circuit being established in 1804.
It was not until 1829 and Catholic Emancipation (in large parts due to Sir Robert Peel of Bury) that Roman Catholic Church building could take place, St Marie's in Manchester Rd, Bury being built in 1842.

Of the 6303 families employed in this Parish, 296 of them are employed chiefly in agriculture, and 5,727 in trade, manufactures or handicraft; the remaining 280 are either engaged in professional pursuits or unemployed.

The town stands on the left bank of the river Irwell, about 2 miles from the confluence of the Roach with that river. The name is Saxon, signifying either a castle or market town.
