The Burneys of Kerr County Texas

 

INTRODUCTION

   In Pauline Burney Brightman’s, “The Burneys from North Carolina”, I read where Lydia McCain Burney left McNairy County Tennessee (after her husband, Robert Hamilton Burney died there) with her sons and went to Kerr County Texas following friends.

   The sons, Hance McCain Burney, William DeWitt Clinton Burney and Robert H. Burney, born in North Carolina are considered pioneer founders of Kerr County Texas.  They served the county as lawman, judges, and other civic officials.

   A. J. Sowell, Texas Ranger, turned author, in one of his writings, Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas writes about these Burney boys – young men at that time.  In this book, Mr. Sowell is interviewing survivors of pioneer days.  The Burney family members are mentioned in several instances engaged in various activities. 

   While reading this book, I learned that Robert Henry Burney, eldest son of Judge Hance McCain Burney had been a Texas Ranger, become Judge and later a State Senator of Texas.  After reading this, I called the State Archives in Austin.  I wanted a picture of Senator Burney.  I got the picture along with 53 pages of material from other sources.

   L. E. Daniel wrote, Personnel of the Texas State Government with Sketches of Representative Men of Texas.  It was this book which contained Senator Burney’s picture and profile.

   In Kerr County Texas, 1856 – 1956, Bob Bennett tells us about Kerrville’s First Cabins, Early Court Sessions, Communities Established, Early School Days, Kerr County Texas, and Town Starts Upgrade.  Burneys are mentioned in each of these articles.

   Kerr County Texas, 1856 – 1976 by Clara Watkins is packed with information; such as names, dates and places of birth, plus dates of marriages and deaths – a real need for the Burney Family Genealogy buff.

   I have been made to realize the members of the Burney Family are remarkable for their exceptional physical and intellectual strength, and for longevity.

   San Antonio has been my home for 33 years now.  I have traveled to Kerrville several times; going through Comfort (Texas) and seeing road signs to other towns – Center Point, Camp Verde and others, but never did I think about my ancestors fighting for their very existence in this area until I got hold of and read this material.

   Mr. Sowell was great great grandfather of my son-in-law, Byron Spears.

Byron’s grandmother gave him a copy of the mentioned book for Christmas.  Upon reading, Sharon, our daughter, saw the Burney name mentioned over and over.  She told me about this and in checking, I found some of the same Burneys mentioned here as in Pauline’s work.

      I attribute Pauline Burney Brightman’s work to my becoming interested  

   in researching the Burneys from North Carolina.
