The name Riffey (Soundex R100) may also be found spelled Riffy, Reiff, Rife, Riffe, Riffee, Rieff, Reiff, and Reif. We think it may be German in origin. It's possible that our ancestors may be found under different spellings.

Melinda Jane Riffey is the oldest ancestor we have firm information about. Her mother was named Martha (1839-1906). Martha and her husband had 5 children: Melinda Jane, Ad, Bill, Ollie, and Jesse.

We know that at least one of Melinda Jane Riffey's brothers (Ad) lived in West Virginia. It's possible that she and her other family members also lived there at one time.

Melinda Jane Riffey married John Smith McQueen, possibly in Johnson County, Tennessee. He is descended from Samuel McQueen. They had 13 children. Melinda Jane died c.1946 and is buried in Wellford, SC.

We found references to a John Riffey (born 1843 or 1844 in VA - d. May 3, 1900 in Cross Co., AR) who may be who Barbara Belle McQueen Busbin was referring to when she told her grandson that she named her youngest son, John William Busbin, after two of her uncles, one who served in the Confederate Army and another (William McQueen) who served in the Union Army. It seems more likely that she may have been referring to John R. Riffey, a Union soldier from West Virginia, simply because of the known family connection with that state. Then, too, we have a William McQueen who was a Confederate soldier. We just can't determine exactly which is which. We're still researching this.

We've also found information about Andreas Riffey and his wife, Anna Maria. We suspect that this line is related to the Melinda Jane Riffey line, but have yet to confirm it.

We'd appreciate any help you can provide that will help us learn more about our Riffey ancestors.
