Margaret remembers one man with three pistols in his belt when the mortician came to get the body. Barbara McQueen used to tell of attending a funeral at which the men carried guns. It is a possibility that your John is connected in some way. This family started out in Roanoke County and David Robinson ended up in Knoxville, TN. His wife, Catherine, of Botetort County, VA, received a pension under the pension Act of 1832. She received $80.00 per annum commencing March 4, 1836. The ceretificate of pension was issued August 18, 1843, the whole amount due being $400.00 under the Act of July 7, 1838. George was a private in the Regiment commanded by Col. Taylor "in the Virginia line for 2 years." The court proceedings were interesting. One witness remembers George giving continental money to his father (unfortunately, his name is not mentioned) who said it was worthless, and put it in his pipe and smoked it. George fought at the battle of Yorktown. I believe George Riffey (or Riffee) was the brother of Jacob Riffee - they are both listed on the 1790 census for Culpeper, VA. Jacob Riffee is on the 1787 personal property tax roles. I believe Jacob Riffee is my ancestor. He also received a Revolutionary War pension, as an Indian spy, last receiving it in Harrison County, VA (now WV) in 1833. I am missing a link between him and my great-great grandfather, George Riffee who was born about 1820 (from the age which appears on his marriage record to Catherine Elder (Eldar) in Harrison County. Several Riffeys appear on the Roanoke and Botetort County VA censuses in the early 1800's.
