Henry Butcher of Denham (d. 1627)

Henry Butcher was probably born about 1565 and lived in Denham (near Eye), which needs to be distinguished from Denham (near Bury) and adjoins Hoxne and Eye.  Possibly he was a son of Robert Butcher of Stradbroke and grandson of Richard Butcher of Wilby? (see Butcher of Wilby )  Or, he may have been born in Denham, where the early registers are lost,  Henrie Butcher of Denham” made a will on 14 May 1627, proven 2 July 1627 (Consistory Court of Norwich wills, v. 122 (1627), f. 234).  This appoints his wife Elizabeth executrix and names his children and grandchildren.  The will does not mention any land, but does mention timber he had cut – and several of this family appear to have been carpenters.  Witnesses to the will were Willm. Alex(?), Robte fferner and ffrancis Tyllney.  Widow Elizabeth Butcher of Denham, Suffolk made a nuncupative will on 12 Dec. 1647, leaving all her property to her son Richard.  Unfortunately, Denham (near Eye) registers don’t commence until 1708.  They had:

i.                     William (eldest brother in Mark Butcher’s will), probably born about 1595.  He married in Eye on 2 May 1623 Elizabeth Batche and had children baptized there through 1639.  On the 1638 lists of Able Men of Suffolk he may be the William Butcher listed in Cookley in Eye.  He left a will in Eye dated 6 Jan. 1659/60 and proven 11 Sep.1660 (“William Bucher”, Archdeacon of Sudbury wills R2/62/58 and W1/112/70 (abstract) ), appointing his wife Elizabeth executrix and leaving his lands to his son William.  Children:

i.                     Elizabeth, bp. 11 June 1623 Eye, mentioned in her grandfather’s will.  Married to ____ Thurston in 1659.

ii.                    ? (register for 1625 is missing for Eye).  A daughter Mary was likely born in this period, and Mary, daughter of William Butcher, was bur. in Eye on 29 July 1626.

iii.                  William, bp. 29 Sep. 1628. He may be the William Butcher buried Eye Dec. 6, 1699 whose estate was administered in Eye in 1699 by widow Joanna.

                                                               i.      John, s. of William Butcher was bp. in Eye 11 Nov. 1662.  He is of the right age to be the John Butcher who had a son John bp. Homersfield 18 Aug. 1690.

iv.                  Katherine, bp. 22 Aug. 1630.  Not mentioned in her father’s will.

v.                   Henry, bp. 5 Mar. 1632, apparently unmarried in 1659.  He is of the right age to be Henry Butcher of Metfield (see below), but did not have a brother Roger (whom Henry of Metfield mentions in his will).  He is probably the Henry Butcher who married in Hoxne (adjacent to Eye) on 10 Oct. 1661 Frances Lynstead.  Henry Butcher was bur. in Hoxne on 3 June 1691; Frances Butcher was buried there on 1 Aug. 1703.  Only one child is shown in the Hoxne register:

                                                               i.      Henry, bp. 1 July 1675 Hoxne.  He may be the Henry Butcher bur. in Denham (nr. Eye) 16 Apr. 1716, and his widow may be the Mary Butcher who mar. there 18 July 1721 Isaac Newson (a transcript of the register has his name as “Iogal Newsom”).  The Denham registers survive only from 1708.  Henry and Mary had:

i.                     Mary, bp. 11 Dec. 1711 Denham

ii.                    perhaps Dorothy, infant, bur. there 4 Oct. 1717

iii.                  perhaps Alice, bur. there 10 Oct. 1721.

There is also in Denham a bap. for “Francis Butcher base son of Samuel Self Junr. ye reported father”, 28 Sep. 1718.  The mother’s name is not shown, but was perhaps widow Mary Butcher?  This Francis might be the Francis Butcher who mar. in Thrandeston, Suffolk 15 Nov. 1743 Elizabeth ? of Stuston (FreeReg).

vi.                  Marjorie, living in 1659.

vii.                Margaret, bp. 25 Aug. 1635, unmarried in 1659.

viii.               Mary, bp. 30 May 1637, unmarried in 1659.

ix.                  Grace, bp. 28 Apr. 1639, unmarried in 1659.

ii.                    Mark.  Mark Butcher of Denham married in Stradbroke 25 Apr 1625 Mary Woolno.  He was buried in Eye 29 Nov. 1647.  His wife (not named) was buried there in Oct. 1647.  Made a will in Eye on 20 Nov. 1647, proven Dec. 1647.  This mentions his mother, oldest brother William Butcher, daughter Annis, George Balls son of John Balls, Mark Road son of Richard Road, and brother Richard Butcher.

i.                     Annis

iii.                  Richard, of Stradbroke in 1647, probably the Richard Butcher, carpenter, who left a will in Weybread dated 22 Feb. 1671/2[1].  This is indexed as “O.W. 1672, no. 33:” in the Norfolk Consistory Court, and exists only as an original will.  It does not appear to be available on microfilm, and the Norfolk Record Office declined to make a photocopy based on fragility of the original.  Records entered into the IGI, apparently taken from this will, indicate that he left children Richard, Henry, Francis, William, Elizabeth, and Lettice.  Richard also apparently left a widow Alice, but seems to have been married before.  The transcripts of the Stradbroke registers show the deaths of two wives of Richard Butcher: Elizabeth, buried on 6 Feb. 1657 and Lettice, buried on 25 Nov. 1662.  However, there are children baptized to Richard and wife Lettice through 1652, by wife Elizabeth in 1655, and by wife Martha 1659-1675, so some of these seem to refer to his son Richard (Jr.).  No records of any of the marriages have been located.  It seems most likely that Richard Sr. was the one who had wife Lettice, with his youngest children appearing in the Stradbroke register.  Issue:

i.                     Richard (Jr.).  He is likely the Richard Butcher who was bur. in Stradbroke 9 Apr. 1676, Seems to have had first wife Elizabeth (bur. 6 Feb. 1657/8) and second wife Martha.  Martha may be the “Widow Butcher” bur. Stradbroke 25 Mar. 1687.  Issue:

                                                         i.            Elizabeth (d. Richard & Elizabeth), bp. 2 Jan. 1655/6 Stradbroke

ii.            James (s. Richard & Martha), bp. 20 Sep. 1659 Stradbroke

iii.            Lettice (d. Richard & Martha), born 4 June and bp. 1 Aug. 1661 Laxfield

iv.            Robert, bp. 29 July 1664 Stradbroke

                                                       v.            William, bp. 26 Sep. 1666.  May be the unnamed “son of Richard and Martha Butcher” bur. 22 July 1668

vi.            Margaret, bp. 18 June 1668

vii.            Francis, bp. 27 Dec. 1670.  There was a Francis Butcher who by wife Easter had dau. Elizabeth bp. 15 Feb. 1701 Kessingland (the Kessingland register starts in 1700).  My perusal of the old Archdeacon of Suffolk indices showed administration of the estate of a Francis Butcher in Kessingland, 1700-09, f. 166.  However, the Suffolk Record Office was not able to locate such a record.

viii.            Margaret, bp. 30 May 1674

ii.                    Henry.  There is some possibility that this could be the Henry Butcher who was ancestor of the Butcher family in Lowestoft (bur. 3 Feb. 1681).  Likely the Henry who married in Withersdale 13 Oct. 1663 Jane Lilly (and not the Henry in Metfield, who had a brother Roger),  He may have married earlier in Linstead Parva on 14 Sept. 1654 Elizabeth Ward and had:

                                                         i.            Robert, bp. 21 Sep. 1659 Linstead Parva, Suff.

iii.                  Francis.  He does not seem to be the Francis Butcher Sr. who left a will in Shelton, Norf. (adjacent to Redenhall and Alburgh) in 1691 – for whom see Butcher of Shelton.  There  was, however, a John Butcher, son of Francis and Elizabeth, bp. Fressingfield 25 Jan. 1679.  The latter might be the John Butcher found in Brockdish, Norf. who had a son Francis (see below).

iv.                  William

v.                   Elizabeth

vi.                  Lettice

vii.                Anne, bur. Stradbroke 27 Sep. 1658

viii.               Mary (dau. of Richard and Lettice), born 24 Dec. bp. 4 Jan. 1649/50 Stradbroke.

ix.                  Margaret (dau. of Richard and Lettice), born 22 Aug., bp. 4 Nov. 1652, bur. 25 Sep. 1658

iv.                  Elizabeth, mar. in Eye 15 Oct. 1616 John Balles.  Her children John and Elizabeth are mentioned in the will of their grandfather, Henry Butcher, while son George Balls is mentioned in Mark Butcher’s will.  Elizabeth Balls was bound apprentice to Mark Butcher in Eye 25 July 1633 (SRO Ipswich EE2/D4/1/116), while John Balls was bound apprentice to William Butcher, yeoman, on the same date.

v.                   James, bp. Hoxne 5 May 1611 and under 21 in 1627.  He likely died without issue, as he is not mentioned in the will of his brother Mark.

vi.                  Martha, born after 1606.

John Butcher (perhaps the one bp. Fressingfield 1679, son of Francis) and Sarah Clarke were marr. 4 Aug. 1707 Brockdish, Norf.  She is apparently the Sarah, “late wife of Jn Butcher of Brockdish”, bur. S. Elmham St. Cross, Suff. 7 Nov. 1707.  John seems to have had a second wife Ann.  He was probably the John Butcher bur, in Brockdish 12 Dec. 1729.

John and Sarah had:

i.                     John, bp. 2 Nov. 1707 Brockdish (see below)

John and Ann had:

ii.                    Elizabeth, bp. 1 Apr. 1711 Brockdish, mar. there 22 Nov. 1737 Philip Prince? (or Prime)

iii.                  Mary, bp. 16 Aug. 1713 Brockdish [IGI – not noted on the faint microfilm I read], probably mar. Brockdish 5 Oct. 1746 Thomas Moore

iv.                  Francis, bp. 6 Oct. 1715

v.                   ?Sarah, bp. 6 Apr. 1718, bur July 10 1718 [parents not shown]

vi.                  Ann, bp. 25 Aug. 1724, probably mar. Brockdish 9 Feb. 1747 John Barber

John Butcher, likely son of the previous bp. 1707, was bur. in Brockdish 24 Oct. 1752 or 7 Feb. 1760.  His wife was likely Mary widow of John Butcher bur. Redenhall 17 Nov. 1782, aged 68.  However, there was also  Mary Butcher, widow, who mar. in Brockdish 17 Nov. 1754 Thomas Moore, widower, with Robert (X) Cunningham and John Harper as witnesses.  John and Mary had one child bp. in Brockdish.  It also appears that widow Mary Butcher was the mother of William Butcher, farmer, of Yoxford, Suffolk, who made a will on 28 Jan. 1774, pr. 12 Aug. 1782 (Archdeacon of Suffolk).  This names as heirs his wife Betsy (lands in Rendlesham), mother widow Mary Butcher of Harleston, sisters Mary and Elizabeth Butcher, and father (-in law?) Mr. John Mabson.

i.                     John, bp. 7 Feb. 1739/40 Brockdish, likely bur. either 1752 or 1760

ii.                    perhaps Anne, d. of John and Mary, bp. 29 July 1744 St. Michael Coslany, Norwich

iii.                  William, died Yoxford, Suff. 1774/82, testate, mar. Betsy Mabson(?).  No issue.

iv.                  Mary

v.                   Elizabeth

Henry Butcher of Metfield

Henry Butcher of Metfield (1637-1705) now appears to have come from Sibton and to have been the son of a George Butcher.

George Butcher appears in Sibton on the 1638 list of Able Men of Suffolk, which includes men from “sixteen to threscore yeeres of Age.”  It seems likely that he may be George Butcher, “son of hewghe” [mother not shown], bp. 31 May 1590 Laxfield, for whose ancestry see Other Early Butcher Families in Hoxne District .  However, if this identification is correct, he married somewhat late in life.  See also the George Butcher bp. 1603 Shelton, Norfolk.

George Butcher, singleman, and Sarah Clerke, singlewoman, were married in Yoxford, Suff. on 8 Nov. 1631, but do not otherwise appear in the Yoxford register.  Instead, we find them with three children in adjacent Sibton, baptized between 1633 and 1642.  I have not found a burial record for George, but his widow was probably the “Sarah Butcher vid.” buried in Sibton 24 Sep. 1678.  Children:

                i.              Anna, bp. 17 Dec. 1633 Sibton

ii.             Henry, bp. 6 May 1637 Sibton (see below)

iii.            Roger, bp. 4 July 1642, living in 1705.  There was a Roger Butcher who paid Hearth Tax in Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1674, who could be this man.  The name Roger Butcher is also found in Great Bircham, Norfolk (well to the north).  A Roger Butcher Sr. was buried in Great Bircham 9 Feb. 1698/9 and a younger Roger Butcher m. in Great Bircham, Norf. 22 Sept. 1684 Ann Wacey.  The latter likely had children bp. in Tittleshall, Norf.  These however look to descend from a Roger Butcher who left a will in Great Bircham in 1650 (ANF), naming wife Amy and children Roger, John, Robert, and Elizabeth.

Henry Butcher was bap. 6 May 1637 in Sibton, Suffolk.  While there are other Henry Butchers of similar age, including Henry Butcher, son of William Butcher, baptized in Eye, Suff. on 5 Mar. 1632, and Henry son of Richard Butcher of Stradbroke, the identification of this Henry as son of George is confirmed by the presence of a brother Roger.

Henry paid hearth tax in Metfield in 1674.  His first marriage is likely shown by a marriage between Henry Butcher of Withersdale and Liddia Stiles in S. Elmham St. James June 1, 1671[2].  Liddia Butcher was bur. Metfield 1 Nov. 1688.  Married secondly in Withersdale 21 Feb. 1689 Ann Clarke.  (There was also a marriage between Henry Butcher and Jane Lilly in Withersdale 13 Oct. 1663 – see above.)  Henry left a will in Metfield dated 10 Sep. 1705 and proven 8 Jan. 1705/6 (abstract)  .  He was buried there 15 Dec. 1705.  The will mentions property in Withersdale, wife Ann, and children.  In the will he also left 20 shillings to his brother Roger Butcher.

Henry Butcher of Metfield had:

i.                     Henry, of Metfield in 1705 and probably born around 1670-75.  Apparently not the Henry (son of Henry and Frances) bp. in Hoxne in 1675.  Henry Butcher of Metfield married in S. Elmham St. Cross 3 May 1698 Sarah Pooly, also of Metfield.  No burial record for him appears in Metfield.  Perhaps he was the Henry Butcher bur. in Mutford, Suff. 20 May 1722?  Sarah seems to have been buried in S. Elmham St. Cross 7 Nov. 1707 (NBI2).  Issue:

i.                     Henry, bp. 3 Oct. 1698 S. Elmham St. Cross, left a bequest in his grandfather’s will.  No probate record or burial has been found for him in Suffolk, and it may be that he moved to Norfolk.  Henry Butcher of Metfield married first in Withersdale, Suff. 2 Dec. 1723 Mary Taylor of Fressingfield.  He may be the Henry Butcher of Metfield, widower, who married in Weybread 17 Aug. 1731 (date confirmed by Bps. Trs.) Elizabeth Elliott, but it seems more likely that he is the Henry Butcher of Mendham who married in Tacolneston, Norfolk (by license) on 6 July 1731 Elizabeth Green of that parish, widow.  In any case, it seems likely that his widow was the “Elizabeth Butcher, widow, from Diss” buried in Hoxne 26 May 1781.  Henry and Mary (Taylor) Butcher had:

i.                     James, bp. Metfield 30 Mar. 1725, bur. 22 June 1725.

ii.                    Henry, bp. Metfield 3 Jan. 1726/7 (Bishop’s Transcripts).  It appears that this is the Henry Butcher who by wife Margaret had a son Jeremiah bp. 1751 Hedenham, Norfolk who was later a prominent resident of Brooke, Norfolk (next to Kirstead).  This is shown by a set of feoffments preserved in the Suffolk RO Ipswich (FC 91/L1/48-49).  On 22 Nov. 1689 Anthony Freston and others made a deed to a number of trustees for church lands in Metfield.  Among the trustees were “Henry Butcher of Metfield, yeoman, and Henry his son.”  These were apparently Henry Sr., and son Henry, b. 1675 (it was not unusual to include a minor as this ensured survivorship of the trust).  On 23 April 1773 “Henry Butcher of Brooke, Norfolk, linen weaver, grandson of Henry Butcher late of Metfield, yeoman deceased, surviving Trustee” released this trust - thus identifying Henry of Brooke as a grandson of Henry (Jr.) of Metfield.  Jeremiah’s son William (1794-1876) was Mayor of Norwich.  Henry seems to have moved first to Woodton.  We find two records in the Bedingham Parish register in 1746 and 1749 referring to children of Henry and Margaret Butcher living at the Hill House belonging to Mrs. Bullifer in Woodton.  He witnessed the marriage of Nathaniel Harvey of Gillingham and Mary Kersey of Hedenham in Hedenham 12 Oct. 1758 (the Hedenham parish registers are currently only partially abstracted on FreeReg and are not in IGI).  Henry seems to have married a second wife Hannah about 1755, and Hannah, wife of Henry Butcher, was bur. Woodton, Norf. 14 Sep. 1767, aged 37.

i.                     Margaret, bp. 6 May 1746 Woodton, bur. Bedingham, Norfok 15 July 1746 (resident of Woodton).

ii.                    Robert, bp. 2 Jan. 1748/9 Bedingham.  Died Brooke 16 Mar. and bur. 20 Mar. 1830, aged 78.  Robert Butcher, farmer, left a will dated Brooke 9 Aug. 1828, pr. 7 Apr. 1830, leaving his property to his wife Deborah, spinster daughter Mary, and daughter Elizabeth wife of William Butcher.  Mar (1) 1788 Mary Burgess and (2) 1799 Deborah Wigg.  Widow Deborah Butcher d. 11 Oct. and was bur. 16 Oct. 1845, Brooke, aged 85.

                                                                                                               i.      Mary, unmarried, probably the Mary Butcher of Brooke who d. 29 May and was bur. 6 June 1833 Brooke, aged 43.

ii.      Deborah, b. ca. 1796, dau. of Robt Butcher and Deborah Wigg, bur. 24 May 1805 Brooke (see Bishop’s Transcripts on Family Search).

iii.      Elizabeth, b. ca. 1798, mar. her cousin William Butcher.  She was bur. Brooke 6 Nov. 1875, resident of St. Stephen, Norwich.

iii.                  Jeremiah, bp. 7 May 1751 Hedenham, Norf..  Resident of Brooke, a merchant, he died while on business at Newcastle upon Tyne 1805, leaving a will dated 25 Feb. 1802 (Court of Archdeacon of Norfolk).  Married 1775 in Brooke to Sarah Underwood (1750-1837). She left a will dated 31 Dec. 1829 (Court of Archdeacon of Norfolk).

                                                                                                               i.      Sophia, mar. 1794 James Madder

ii.      Jeremiah, born ca. 1778/9 Brooke, of Norwich Town Center in 1851, retired grocer, mar. Elizabeth Ifgrave

iii.      James, bp. Brooke 28 June 1784, of Drayton, Norf. in 1851, d. Drayton 29 Aug 1852, mar. Brooke 1807 Maria Chase

iv.      Robert the younger, will Brooke 1807, proven 1811.  Widow Rachel married secondly William Thurston

                                                                                                             v.      Maria

                                                                                                            vi.      Charles

vii.      William, b. 1794 Brooke, bur. there 22 Apr. 1876, Auctioneer and later Mayor of Norwich, mar. his cousin Elizabeth, d. Robert Butcher.  In 1851 he was living in St. Stephen’s, Norwich.

viii.      Edward, b. Brooke abt. 1800/01, a corn and coal merchant in Bungay, Suffolk, wife Maria.  Listed in Bungay Holy Trinity, Suffolk in 1851.  Left a will in 1853.

iv.                  Mary, bp. 22 June 1755 Woodton, bur. 8 July 1755.

We then find children of Henry and Hannah Butcher, likely a second wife:

v.             Mary, bp. 16 May 1756 Woodton

vi.            Henry, bp. 12 Mar. 1758/9

vii.           Phillip, bp. 24 Aug. 1760

viii.          Hannah, bp. 28 Oct. 1762

ix.            Margaret, bp. 27 July 1765

iii.            James, bp. Mendham 27 Dec. 1728.   Perhaps he is the James Butcher who married in Worlingworth 9 Nov. 1762 Elizabeth Tayler

v.                   Mary, bp. Mendham 9 May 1730

Henry Butcher and second wife Elizabeth had:

vi.                  Robert, bp. Hoxne 14 Aug. 1735.  Probably the Robert Butcher bur. in Hoxne 30 Jan. 1753.

vii.                Mary, bp. Hoxne 7 Apr. 1737 (shown as dau. of Henry and Mary in the transcript).

viii.               Elizabeth, bp. Hoxne 9 Mar. 1738/9 (dau. of Henry & Elizabeth)

ix.                  perhaps Christina Butcher, infant, bur. Hoxne 26 Apr. 1744

ii.                    James, bp. 29 May 1702 S. Elmham St. Cross, left a bequest in grandfather’s will (1705/6).  Probably one of the James Butchers in Mendham.  I think he is most likely the one who married. there 2 Feb. (transcript, or 2 Dec., Bishops Trs.) 1735 Rachel Rackham.  Rachel Butcher was bur. Mendham All Sts. 10 May 1770.  He may be the James Butcher bur. Mendham 11 Sep. 1763, or perhaps the James Butcher, labourer, bur, 20 Aug. 1776.  James and Rachel had:

i.              James, bp. 25 June 1736 Mendham.  Probably the James who mar. in Mendham 18 Oct. 1762 Elizabeth Rackham (witness John Barber, John Lovick; wife’s name shown as Rachel on FHS transcript).  I think he is likely the James Butcher, labourer, bur. 20 Aug. 1776.  A widow Elizabeth Butcher of Mendham mar. there on 7 Dec. 1780 by lic. John Moore, widower, of Wortwell, Norfolk (witness David Pye, Edwd. Buckingham).  James and Elizabeth had:

i.              James, bp. 19 June 1763 Mendham.  Probably the James Butcher (signing by mark) who mar. in Mendham on 16 Jan. 1792 Ann Bilney, with John Hill and Rachel Butcher witnesses.

ii.             Elizabeth, bp. 5 Jan. 1766.  Likely the Elizabeth Butcher who mar. in Weybread on 5 Nov. 1788 John Barnaby, with Thomas Kent and Rachael Butcher witnesses.  They had children bap. in Weybread.

iii.            Henry, bp. 24 Feb. 1771, bur. 22 Dec. 1771

iv             Henry, bp. 8 Aug. 1773, mar. in Mendham on 24 Apr. 1801 Abishag Borrows with John Barnaby and Thos. Lovick witnesses.  Bur. in Mendham 12 Feb. 1857, aged 85.  Abishag Burrows was bp. in Redisham, Suffolk 5 Feb. 1775, daughter of Joseph and Lucy Burrows

v.             perhaps Rachel, who mar. in Mendham on 12 Oct. 1798 Arthur Cooper, with James (X) Butcher and Thomas Lovick witnesses

ii.                    Benjamin, bp. 11 Apr. 1739 Mendham.  A Benjamin Butcher was bur. in Mendham 19 July 1784.

iii.                  Rachel, bp. 6 June 1745.  Mar. Ilketshall St. Margaret 24 May 1769 Benjamin Self

iii.                  Sarah, bp. 9 May 1706 S. Elmham St. Cross.

ii.                    daughter [prob. Elizabeth] , died before 1705 leaving issue, married John Catolin [Catling], probably of Fressingfield

iii.                  Nathaniel, left land in Withersdale by his father and appointed executor.  He is likely that Nathaniel Butcher whose estate was administered in Wilby in 1726 – although there was also a Nathaniel Butcher burial recorded in Metfield Nov. 16, 1727, “as appears by affidavit of ye widow” – perhaps his body was removed to the family plot there.  The Wilby parish register shows Nathaniel’s burial on the same date.  Wife Ann – so he is probably the Nath. Butcher for whom an Archd. Mar. Lic. to Ann Connold is shown in Boyd’s Index for 1706.  Issue:

i.                     Nathaniel, bp. Metfield 1 Nov. 1709 (IGI) who married in Wilby 7 Jan. 1729 Martha Pollard.  Martha was buried in Wilby 28 Sep. 1762.  He (rather than his son) is the Nathaniel Butcher buried in Wilby 21 Nov. 1792, aged 83 (NBI2) – but, if so, most of his children must have predeceased him.  Nathaniel Butcher, clock and watch maker, who made a will in Wilby 28 Feb. 1791, pr. 19 Dec. 1792 (Norfolk CC), naming three daughters only.  The first two were left one shilling each, and the bulk of the estate went to unmarried daughter Edna.

i.                     Nathaniel, bp. 27 Feb. 1731 Halesworth, Suff., son of Nathaniel Butcher, smith, and wife.  Bur. Cratfield, Suff. 21 1732/3 Cratfield (son of Nathaniel and Martha).

ii.                    Martha, bp. 15 Aug. 1734 Wilby, prob. mar. Wilby 12 Oct. 1762 John Catchpole, but not named in Nathaniel’s will.  She may be the Martha Catchpool bur. Wilby 7 Apr. 1781?

iii.                  Nathaniel, bp. Stradbroke 20 Feb. 1735/6.   There were Nathaniel Butchers buried in Framlingham on 17 Mar. 1757 and 6 Aug. 1758 (NBI2).  There was also a Nathaniel Butcher who married in Halesworth on 29 July1764 Mary Hopson and had children Martha, Nathaniel, and Mary there.

iv.                  John, bp. Stradbroke 21 Apr. 1738, bur. 24 Apr. 1738.

v.                   Abishag, bp. Stradbroke 22 Sep. 1741, was married to Robert Smith of Harlestone Green in 1791.

vi.                  Abimelech, bp. 31 Oct. 1742 Wilby.  May be the “Abimelee” Butcher buried in Ipswich St. Mary Stoke 15 June 1762 (NBI2)

vii.                Ann, bp. 12 Nov. 1745, not named in he father’s will.

viii.               Cleopatra, married to John Barnby, Gent. of Yoxford in 1791.  They had three children baptized in Yoxford in 1779.

ix.                  Edna, bp. 10 Mar. 1750 Wilby, unmarried in 1791.  An inscription in the Wilby churchyard shows that Edna Butcher, spinster, died 3 Aug. 1833, aged 84.  According to Rosemary Frost’s notes, she made a will leaving her property to her Barnby relatives of Yoxford.

ii.                    Henry, bp. 25 Mar. 1711 Metfield, bur 6 July 1712

iii.                  Henry, bp. 11 July 1712 Metfield, bur. 6 Sep. 1712

iv.                  Nicholas, bp. 8 July 1714 Metfield.  Perhaps the Nicholas Butcher who married in Diss, Norfolk 27 Nov. 1744 Jane Murrel (Boyd’s Index).  The date may be transcribed incorrectly, as they seem to have had a daughter in 1742.  They then seem to have moved to Brome, Suff. where a child was bp. in 1748.  No further children appear in the Brome register through 1765.  A Nicholas Butcher was buried in Brome, Suff. 10 Oct. 1776 and a Jane Butcher, age 81, was bur. there 21 Aug. 1803 (NBI2).

i.         Jane, bp. 24 May 1742 Pulham St. Mary the Virgin, Norf. (shown on FreeReg as “Bulcher”).

ii.        John (son of Nicholas and Jenny), bp. 27 Feb. 1748 Brome, Suff.  Appears to have had children in Brome.

v.                   Mary, bp. 5 Jan. 1716 Metfield, perhaps the Mary Butcher bur. Metfield 20 Mar. 1727/8.

vi.                  Henry, bp. 13 Mar. 1716/7 Wilby.  Perhaps he is the Henry Butcher, widower, aged 77, bur. Loddon, Norf. 21 Dec. 1796?  He might be the Henry Butcher who by wife Mary had:

i.              Henry, bp. 20 Apr. 1751 Framlingham, bur. 14 June 1751 (infant)

No early Butcher baptisms appear in Loddon (acc. to FreeReg), but the following do appear there:

·                     Sarah Butcher, born ca. 1740, mar. Loddon 5 Oct. 1762 Robert Mallett.  She was bur. in Loddon 14 May 1791, aged 51.

·                     Henry, born ca. 1754, bur. in Loddon in 1824, aged 70.  Mar. in Hemblington, Norf. on 25 Oct. 1784 Sarah Baker.  Sarah Butcher, aged 69, was bur. in Loddon in 1821.

·                     Hannah, born ca. 1760, mar. in Loddon 5 Nov. 1787 John Orsborne.  Hannah Osborn, late Butcher, wife of John Osborn, aged 32 was bur. in Loddon 1 May 1792,

vii.                Ann, bp. 22 May 1719 Wilby

viii.               Lydia, bp. June 19 1722 Wilby (Bishops Transcripts).  Might be the Lydia Butcher bur. Metfield 5 Aug. 1722 (from Bishops Transcripts).

ix.                  John, bp. 6 Mar. 1723/4 Wilby.  I suspect he is the John Butcher who mar. in Framlingham 23 Apr. 1753 Mary Jordan.  One John Butcher, married man, was bur. Framlingham 12 Jan. 1795 and another John Butcher, married man, 73, was bur. there 5 June 1795.  Mary, widow of John Butcher was bur. 7 July 1808.  Issue:

i.                     John, bp. 21 May 1755 Framlingham

ii.                    Sarah, bp. 21 Dec. 1755

iii.                  Nathaniel, bp. 12 May 1756, bur. 17 Mar. 1757

iv.                  Ann, bp. 16 July 1757, bur. 15 Aug. 1757

v.                   Nathaniel, bur. 5 Aug. 1758

vi.                  Benjamin, bp. 25 July 1758

vii.                Richard, bp. 15 Dec. 1760

Mark Butcher of Metfield

Mark Butcher of Metfield, South Elmham All Saints, and Mendham, Suffolk (1705-1792) has now been identified as a member of the Butcher family originating in Wilby.  See Richard Butcher Family of Wilby, Suffolk.

Mark Butcher of St. James South Elmham

(From http://www.islandregister.com/butcher1.html with additional notes), another Mark Butcher was born abt. 1722/3.  A baptismal record has not been found for him – and does not seem to appear in the Archdeacon of Suffolk Bishop’s Transcripts.  Perhaps he was baptized in a dissenting church?  He married Elizabeth K[e]able June 4, 1750 in Cratfield, Suffolk.  Elizabeth was bp. 21 July 1728 Cratfield, daughter of John and Sarah (Woulnoe) Keable.  Mark was bur. 8 Apr. 1798 St James S. Elmham, aged 75.  Their children were:

i.              John, bp. 22 Dec. 1750 S. Elmham St. James, bur. 23 Nov. 1770 S. Elmham St. James

ii.                    Elizabeth, bp. June 10, 1752, St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England.   Married William Smith, South Elmham St. James 23 Mar. 1777 (Jonathan Keable and Rich. Smith, witnesses).  Married (2nd) 20 July 1794 S. Elmham St. James to Henry Calver.

iii.                  Sarah, bp. September 15 (14?), 1755, St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England.

iv.                  James, bp January 8, 1757, St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England.  Married in South Elmham St. James on 24 Sep. 1780 widow Sarah (Smith) Patrick (Wm. Smith, Rich. Smith witnesses).  She was buried Mar. 6, 1788, aged 45. They had

i.                     John, bp. 19 Aug. 1781 South Elmham St. James.  Mar. in Bungay St. Mary 11 Oct. 1803 Keziah Wittler (Lydia Rackham and Robert Banham witnesses).  The 1851 Census shows him in Bungay Holy Trinity as aged 70, “Printer late (pauper)”, b. St. James, with wife Keziah, 76, and unmarried daughter Bertha B., 43.  He also appears there in 1861, occupation given as “Pauper (formerly dealer in marine stores).”

ii.                    Mark, bp. 7 Aug. 1785.  He was living in Methwold, Norfolk in 1851 (with wife Frances) and Feltwell, Norf. in 1861 (a carpenter, lodging there without family).  Mar. St. James So. Elmham 9 June 1807 Frances Chipperfield.  The IGI identifies him with Mark Butcher of Gisleham and Blundeston, Suff., who mar. in Blundeston 29 Mar 1819 Mary Hodge and was bur. Blundeston 23 May 1871.  The 1871 Census for Blundeston shows that Mark as a “Chelsea Pensioner”, but indicates he was born in Wenhaston about 1787/8 – so the IGI identification is apparently incorrect.  That Mark was in Gisleham in 1851, ag. labourer, with wife Mary.  I have not learned his parentage.

v.                   Mark, b. May 4, bp. May 30 (20?), 1760, St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England.  Buried 10 (19?) May 1772.

i.                     James, b. November 11, bp. Nov. 14, 1796, St. Cross, South Elmham, Suffolk, England.  Of Soham, Cambridgeshire on 1851 Census, which shows his birthplace as St. James, Suffolk.

ii.                    Francis, b. Abt. 1799, Suffolk, England; d. July 19, 1873, The Heath Farm, Wenhaston, Suffolk, England; m. Mary Ann; b. Abt. 1820; d. June 11, 1876.

He married Hannah Watson November 5, 1787 in St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England (Eliz. Smith and James Butcher, witnesses). She was born Abt. 1760 in Suffolk, England, and died July 1, 1838 in Charlottetown, PEI.  Issue:

ix.                  John, bp. 28 Dec. 1770, St. James, South Elmham, Suffolk, England.

Henry Butcher of Ilketshall St. Margarets

This line is being actively researched by Rosemary Frost (rosemaryfrostuk @yahoo.co.uk).  The family appears likely to be related to the other Henry/Mark Butcher families outlined above.

Henry Butcher was born ca. 1740 and was living in Ilketshall St. Margaret, Suffolk by 22 Jan. 1773, when he witnessed the marriage of Samuel Earl and Elizabeth Darby.  He married there on 5 July 1774 Hannah Martin (daughter of John and Mary [Browning?] Martin), with Rob. Bunn and Edmund Sheppard as witnesses.  Hannah was buried in Ilketshall St. Margarets on March 6, 1814, aged 61.  Henry Butcher was buried there on 12 Aug. 1819, aged 80.  His estate was administered in Dec. 1819, with letters of administration granted to his daughter Hannah Butcher and to James Todd and George Martin.  Henry and Hannah had the following children:

i.                     James, bp. 25 Dec. 1774 Ilketshall St. Margaret, bur. 12 June 1783.

ii.                    Hannah, bp. 10 May 1778, died 4 Nov. 1861 Bungay, single, leaving a will.

iii.                  Henry, bp. 16 Feb. 1781, d. 7 Mar. 1855 S. Elmham St. James.  Married Sarah Balls on 14 Oct. 1818 at S. Elmham St. James.

iv.                  Stephen, bp. 22 Feb. 1785, d. 6 Sep. 1863 Snettisham, Norfolk.  Mar. 8 Nov. 1808 in Garboldisham, Norfolk to Elizabeth Stone.

[1] Weybread parish registers are lost before 1687 and this family does not appear in the later registers.

[2] He is not the Henry Butcher, baker, with wife Lydia in Norwich St. Stephens as that couple had children baptized starting in 1662.
