Hamilton's origin dates back to 1791 when Fort Hamilton was built along the Great Miami River.  Both were named after Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the Treasury.
After Butler County was formed in 1803, Hamilton became its center for administration and justice.  By the time this photograph of businesses along High Street was taken (1888) the population had reached nearly 17,500 and Hamilton was becoming a major industrial center.  By 1910 the city's population swelled to some 40,000 residents.
