Schools of Butler County -- Their History
Morgan Township Schools by Helen Oyler, November, 1932

The first school in Morgan township was opened in section 35 in 1807, although public schools were not provided for by taxation by the state until 1821.  The township was divided into nine school districts and a one-room school building was built in each district.  In 1899, in district number five near Okeana, a two-room building was constructed to accommodate the first eight grades and also to provide a room for a high school, which was opened in the following year.

By 1907, two new rooms had been built above the original two rooms.  The steadily growing high school was classified as first grade in 1910.  In 1915 two more rooms were added and in the same year pupils from districts one and two were transported to district five.

Morgan township has the distinction of being the first in Butler County to have transportation of pupils and an established list of textbooks with a course of study.

In 1917 the school in district three was abandoned and pupils were transported to district five.  In 1921 schools in districts eight and four were likewise abandoned and the next year pupils from nine were transported to district five. In 1922, 2.61 acres of land were purchased to provide a playground of ample size.  A small building was purchased and moved on the school property in 1925 and for two years it was used for a school room for the fourth grade.  Since then it has been used as a manual training room.  In 1926 pupils from district six were transported to district five. By September, 1927, three more rooms and a gymnasium had been added to the building.
