The company of Owens, Lane, and Dyer began in 1847 as a foundry making iron castings, moldings, and iron stoves. They expanded operations to include machinery and gears needed for flour and saw mills. | |

By 1853 they were manufacturing steam engines and papermaking
machinery. The company dissolved in 1879 and Hooven, Owens, Rentschler
was formed in its place.
The Ritchie and Dyer Company was founded in 1881 by William Ritchie and William Dyer who had been formerly associated with the Owens, Lane, Dyer Company. This new company manufactured traction engines and saw mills. |

Later William Ritchie became associated with the Advance Manufacturing Company of Hamilton which was located at B Street and Wayne Avenue.
