Older residents of Sevenmile tell us that an old log building, located one mile east of town on the William Heinzelman farm, served as the first public school in this region. The second building, located on the southeast corner of the present school grounds, preceded a two-room building located where the Methodist church now stands.  In 1872, this site was sold to the church and the school was moved into the old academy building which had been erected in 1857 and had served as a private school until about 1870 when Professor Benjamin Starr opened a private boys' preparatory school.

In 1896, the three members of the first graduating class became teachers.  The academy building, remodeled in 1909, with an addition erected in 1924, serves today as the community's school building.  A first grade charter was granted to the high school on April 20, 1922, and six year charter on May 2, 1932.

The school's 267 pupils are taught by an able corps of nine teachers.  Commercial, home economics, industrial arts, and college preparatory courses are offered.
