Shortly after the founding of St. Peter Lutheran Church in 1860, a number of its members withdrew because they favored the Evangelical church instead of the Lutheran. In 1867, these members formed their own congregation which became known as St. John. The cornerstone for their church was laid on June 28, 1868 and the building was dedicated in November, 1868. A cemetery was located to the rear of the building.
The last services were held in the church in 1931. The membership of the church was absorbed by St. Paul Evangelical Church in Middletown. The church building was sold to the Church of the Nazarene in 1949.
