Wirtz Transfer
Wirtz Transfer Company, Hamilton
Fifth and Maple
The A. Wirtz Transfer and Storage Company was founded in Hamilton in 1870 by Andrew Wirtz, a native of Germany.  He purchased the Gray Eagle Building at Second and Market Streets.  In the beginning the company required only a horse and buggy and two men to do the work.  The wages of the movers was nine to fifteen dollars per week and the charge for moving averaged four dollars.  After the death of Mr. Wirtz, control of the business was passed on to his sons, George, Rudolph, and Joseph.

In 1900 the business was incorporated by George and Julius Wirtz and John Heiser.  They moved the business to Fifth and Maple Streets to allow for expansion of the facility.  In 1933, ownership of the business was passed on to Andrew Wirtz, son of George Wirtz.  The business did not leave the Wirtz family until 1955 when it was sold to Fenton Rigging Company of Cincinnati.
