History of St. Veronica Catholic Church
St. Veronica Catholic Church, Hamilton
Shuler Avenue

In 1893, the Catholics of the eastern part of Hamilton made a request for the building a church in their neighborhood.  A site was selected at the corner of Shuler and Hensley avenues, the ground having been donated by Kahn, Mosler, and O.V. Parish.  On May 11, 1895, the church was dedicated by Archbishop Elder.

Pastors of St. Veronica, 1894-1927

  • The Rev. Henry Proepperman
Born January 18, 1863
Ordained December 17, 1887
Died April 7, 1906

The Rev. Henry Proepperman was the first pastor appointed to serve St. Veronica Parish.  He was the assistant pastor at St. Joseph Church when the new parish was started, and as it neared completion the Most Rev. Archbishop appointed him its first pastor.  During the short time he spent in this capacity he lived at St. Joseph Church and came to East Hamilton on Sunday to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.  Father Proepperman received a new appointment on July 13, 1895.

  • The Rev. George Franz
Born February 7, 1861
Ordained May 31, 1890
Died January 14, 1919

Father Franz continued the work of organization under the same handicap that limited the work of his predecessor; i.e. -- there was no rectory.  With the slow transportation of those days, his home was too far away from the scene of his work. He stayed until September 9, 1897.

  • The Rev. Henry Kues
Born February 3, 1861
Ordained June 19, 1894
Died November 5, 1918

Father Kues undertook the task of enlarging the school and the church while serving as pastor of St. Veronica Church. This program of expansion and renovation was completed in 1903 and cost approximatelv $11,000. His work in the parish was rewarded with great blessings. Father Kues was changed in October, 1910.

  • The Rev. Oscar William Gerhardus
Born May 17, 1877
Ordained June 22, 1903
Died August 1, 1927

The Rev. Father Oscar Gerhardus began his work in St. Veronica in October, 1910, and remained as pastor of this parish until his death in 1927. During his seventeen years of constant effort, St. Veronica congregation grew to such numbers that the combination Church and School would no longer adequately serve the needs of the parish. In 1923, under the direction of Father Gerhardus the basement Church was finished: this Church would seat six hundred people. In order to supply this need the parish incurred a serious debt, which was only paid off many years later.  After a lingering illness, Father Gerhardus died August 1, 1927. After the death of Father Gehardus the Rev. Wyman, C.P.P.S., was appointed administrator of the parish. He remained in this capacity for eight months.
