Viola O. Xander, 89, Rock Island, died May 9, 2004, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Dr. Ron Stewart, pastor of Broadway Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial is in Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time. Memorials may be made to Broadway Presbyterian Church, 710 23rd St., Rock Island.
She was born Dec. 20, 1914, in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Carl O. and Lizzie Gorsch Obermueller.
She graduated from Marengo, Iowa, High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College, now Northern Iowa University. She taught school and was deputy superintendent of schools in Iowa County prior to her marriage to William B. Xander on April 18, 1944, in Marengo. After her marriage, she moved to Rock Island, and in 1951 moved to Kankakee, Ill. For 32 years prior to her retirement, she was secretary to Samuel H. Shapiro, former governor of Illinois. She moved back to Rock Island in 1992.
She was a member of Kankakee Valley Chapter Professional Secretaries International, Elks Emblem Club of Kankakee, Rock Island Woman's Club and Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island.
She is survived by a sister, Lucille Almquist, Moline; nieces, Judith Roberts, Earlene McCaw; and nephews, Larry Schafbuch and Robert Ortiz. Preceding her in death were her husband on July 27, 1991; her mother and father; sister, Marcella Schafbuch; brother, Leon Obermueller; half-sister, Emma Vogt; half-brother, Henry Schafbuch; and niece, Cleo Vogt DeWitte.

Xander, Viola Viola Xander, retired secretary ROCK ISLAND -- Viola O. Xander, 79, of Rock Island, formerly of Kankakee, died Sunday (May 9, 2004) in Rock Island. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. services at the Knox-Larson Funeral Home, 2106-7th Avenue, Rock Island. Neal Lloyd, pastor of Broadway Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Broadway Presbyterian Church, 710-23rd St., Rock Island. Mrs. Xander was a retired secretary to Samuel H. Shapiro, former Governor of Illinois for 32 years. She had also taught school and was deputy superintendent of schools in Iowa County prior to her marriage.
