Ordered that the Appeal of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor in the parish and township of Wadsworth in the West Riding against an adjudication and order under the hands and seals of Samuel Waterhouse and John Baldwin, Esquires, two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the Borough of Halifax bearing date 23rd day of August last made for removal of Sarah Astin, Singlewoman, from the township of Halifax to the parish township or place Wadsworth to be respected until the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be holden by adjournment at Wakefield in and for the said Riding

[1826-1905] Son of Robert Astin.

He was a woolcomber [1851]

He married Hannah [1829-1906].

The couple were buried at Luddenden Dean Wesleyan Chapel [Grave No. 83].


The purchaser of this plot was Thomas Astin of Green Edge, Warley.

[1830-1858] Son of Abraham Astin.

He was a schoolmaster [1858]

He lived at Beanholehead, Stansfield.

He never married.

He died 4th February 1858 (aged 27).

Probate records show that he left effects valued at under £200.

Administration was granted to his father Abraham

Astin, Vernon
[1899-1962] Son of James 1858 Astin.

Born in Halifax.

He was a chemist's apprentice.

During World War I, he enlisted [12th May 1917], and served with the Royal Engineers. He was wounded [21st August 1918] but remained on duty.

On 19th October 1918, he was charged with neglect in reporting his battery. The matter was discharged

In [Q3] 1925, he married Nellie Sheard in Halifax

Astin, Walter
[1880-19??] DCM.

Son of John Astin.

Born 18th August 1880.

He was a lapper in cotton mill [1891] / a joiner's apprentice [1901] / a machinist of 10 Calder Avenue [1905] / working in the railway goods department [1911] / a cabinet machinist with Mr Ayrton of Portland Street, Halifax / a printer's labourer.

In 1905, he married Martha Ann Kendall at St Paul's Church, King Cross.


Martha Ann was born in Thornhill, Yorkshire, the daughter of William Thomas Kendall.

She was a twiner piecer (cotton) [1911]

During World War I, he enlisted [October 1914] with the 4th (Reserve) Battalion West Riding Regiment.

He was appointed Lance Corporal [May 1917], and Corporal [August 1918].

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal [1917] for


the great example of coolness and high sense of duty shown when he was in command of a Lewis gun team holding an advanced position. The gun was twice buried and on the second occasion the NCs were disabled and the gun put out of action. He obtained picks and shovels, and the team extricated the guns on each occasion.

The commanding officer was alerted and sent another gun team to provide relief. Astin accepted the gun but sent the relief team back and continued to hold the position with his own team until the advance of the battalion

 

He was discharged [September 1918] due to a gunshot wound to the head which fractured his skull and made him

no longer physically fit for the service

In November 1918, he was awarded a pension of 30/- a week for his service and 6d a week for the DCM.

He survived the War.

He married Grace [1793-1862].

[1808-1877] He was a brooch maker of Halifax [1832] / a comb maker [1841, 1851] / a woolcomber [1861] / a donkey driver [1871].

In 1832, he married Lucy Norton [1809-1873].

In 1861, Ann Astin, her daughter-in-law Helen (née Dawkins) and Ann's 2-month-old granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Astin, were staying with Helen's parents Thomas & Catherine Dawkins at Reepham, Lincolnshire

In 1841, he married Mary Greenwood [1822-1???].

On 1st January 1906, he married Selina [1874-1931].


Selina, of Sunny Bank, Hebden Bridge, was the daughter of William Gaskell, coal miner, and widow of Henry Hazelgrave, who she had married [1892] at Featherstone
 

Selina died in 1931 (aged 58)
