He was wounded in action [9th June 1917].

He was killed in action [22nd September 1917] (aged 20).

He was buried at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle-d'Armentières, France [IV A 6].

He played with many local brass bands before joining Clifton Band in 1910.

In 1924, he joined Brighouse & Rastrick Band as professional conductor until 1932 when William Halliwell took over Fred stayed as Bandmaster until 1944

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £53,222 12/8d to his mother, with whom he had been living. Probate lists in 1899 show that he left £158 10/11d to his sister Emmaline

During World War I, he had poor eyesight and failed to join the Inns of Court Regiment, and enlisted [1916] and served as a Private / Gunner with the Motor Machine Gun Corps / Royal Tank Corps.

He was killed by a shell splinter whilst trying to stem a German breakthrough in the Armentières Sector [26th April 1918].

He was buried at Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France [III E 8].
