[1924-1944] Son of Esther & John Binns of Southowram.

During World War II, he served as a Cook with the Royal Navy aboard the frigate HMS Mourne.

He died 15th June 1944 (aged 20)  when his ship was torpedoed and sank in the English Channel, with the loss of 110 crew.

He is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial [91 2]

Binns, Alfred
[1838-1915] Son of John Binns.

He was educated at Barkisland Grammar School / a wire drawer working for his father [1861] / a partner in J. & A. Binns Limited [1871]. When his father retired [between 1881 & 1891], Alfred carried on with the business until his death in 1915.

He married [Q3] 1882 Jane Berry in Halifax.

They had no children.

They lived at Moorgarth, Skircoat Green

Binns, Arnold
[1884-1960] Of Mytholmroyd.

He became the world roller-skating champion.

In June 1930, he skated non-stop for 40 hours 13 minutes at Burnley – a world endurance record.

On 10th September 1930 he started the journey of 912½ miles on roller skates from John O' Groats to Land's End, and finished 14th October 1930.

Some months later, he skated for 61 hours 18 minutes at Preston – living on tripe, eggs, milk and Horlicks.

On 29th July 1933, he set another world endurance skating record by skating continuously for 177 hours 13 minutes.

He later broke this record by 2 hours in a session at Batley.

He died of wounds [30th September 1918].

He was buried at the Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulencourt, France [E 25]. He is remembered on the family grave at Mount Zion Primitive Methodist Chapel, Norland.

Binns, Dinah
[1879-1969] Daughter of Jabez Binns.

Born 21st April 1879.

She was a barton [?] factory hand [1891] / an active suffragette / imprisoned after demonstrations.

During the fustian weavers' strike of 1906, she, Lavinia Saltonstall, Lillian Cobbe, Lizzie Berkly, Louisa Saltonstall, Lily Draper and Laura Annie Wilson, were amongst 57 suffragettes and others who were arrested and imprisoned following an attack on the House of Commons in March 1907. All were given the option of 20/- fine plus costs or imprisonment. They all opted for 14 days' imprisonment in Holloway Gaol.

During Crabtree's Tour of Calder Dale of 1832, he claimed to be in favour of the Ten Hours Bill, saying that he ran his mill for no more than 10 hours per day, and paid his men £1 per week. The workers said they earned 12/- or 13/- per week, and the mothers said that

their children were worked past their strength

Born in Halifax [29th January 1899].

He was a labourer [1915] / employed by Charles Horner Limited at Mile Cross, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [15th June 1915], and served as a Rifleman with the 13th Battalion the Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade.

He went to France on SS Invicta [23rd March 1916].

He was wounded in action and brought back to the England aboard SS Lanfranc. After recuperating in England, he was sent back to France [6th February 1918].

He was killed in action [8th May 1918] (aged 19).

Binns, Richard Sutcliffe
[1838-1897] He was born out of wedlock to Susannah Sutcliffe.

His father's name is given as George Binns on his marriage record.

Susannah & George married in 1854.

Born in Ovenden.

He was a fustian dyer and finisher [1881, 1890].

He was at West End, Hebden Bridge, Norland, and Stubbins Dye Works

He held several public offices, and was on the Board of Guardians.

On 11th September 1872, he married Susannah Parker at St James the Great Church, Hebden Bridge.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died 21st July 1918 (aged 33).

He is remembered on the Soissons Memorial, France, and on Luddenden & Midgley War Memorial

Binns, Samuel George
[1909-1942] Son of Emma & Arthur Binns.

He worked for I. & I. Calvert at Wainstalls.

In [Q3] 1935, he married Winifred Elsie Bown in Halifax.

They lived at 18 Clough Lane, Mixenden.

During World War I, he served as an Able Seaman with the Royal Navy aboard HMS President III.

He died 29th June 1942 (aged 33)  when SS Empire Mica was torpedoed by German Submarine U-67, and sank in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida, with the loss of 33 of her crew of 47.

He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, England [63 1],

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance on the Memorial at Christ Church, Pellon, and on a grave at Mount Tabor Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.

In 1943, Winifred was living in Hasland, Chesterfield

Binns, Sarah
[1???-18??] A character whom Anne Lister mentions in her journals.

On 19th November 1819, she implies that there was some sexual relationship between them, but later comments suggest that the character was entirely fictitious

Binns, Sarah
[1857-1941] Daughter of Samuel Binns.

Born in Cleckheaton, and baptised on 7th January 1858 at Hartshead.

She was a worstead weaver in Liversedge [1881]. After her parents died, she looked after her siblings.

Sarah had a daughter Amy Sarah Binns [1882-1963]. It appears that Amy Sarah was brought up by two of her great aunts, while her mother, Sarah, got on with the rest of her life.

Regarding Amy Sarah's father, contributor Sheena Spencer writes

according to a family tale, William Henry Pettyt was set to marry Amy Sarah's mother, Sarah, but he deserted her and left for America.

Another tale says that William Clapham Flint died before he and Sarah could be married.

However, records that have been found, and the research of Eugenie Flather in the 1960s, cast doubt on this story.

We are not sure who was Amy Sarah's father, but, given her date of birth, we guess it was Mr Pettyt

Amy Sarah married Walter Harold Butterfield Flather [1881-1936].

In 1888, Sarah married (1) William Clapham Flint. They had a daughter, Ada.

After William's death, Sarah married (2) George Brook Senior

[1859-1934] Born in Norland.

On 24th November 1879, he married Emma Hanglin [1860-1928] at Elland Parish Church.

The will was proved by daughter Gertrude and Arthur Victor Gledhill (woollen carder).

[18??-18??] Local artist who drew many scenes of early 19th century Halifax.

Between 1841-1846, these were published as Reproductions of Pencil Drawings.

Some of the drawings were used in the Yorkshire Coiners by Henry Ling Roth

He was a clerk [1917].

During World War I, he enlisted [24th March 1917], and served as a Private with the 1st/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.

He was held in reserve at Brocton Camp until he went France [31st Mar 1918].

He was killed in action after 1 week in France [10th April 1918].

He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium [8 & 9], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Saint Jude's Church, Savile Park

[1834-1910] Son of Hannah & Richard Binns, weaver.

Born in Queenshead [21st December 1834].

He was a mechanic [1859] / an engineer [1866] / a machine tool maker [1891] / a mechanical engineer (employer) [1901] / a partner in Binns Brothers.

In June 1880, he was declared bankrupt.

On 24th September 1859, he married Mary Dyson [1847-1???] at Halifax Parish Church.


Mary was born in Norland, the daughter of James Dyson, corn miller

During the South African Wars, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.

He was reported missing and assumed to have died after the Battle of Spion Kop [23rd January 1900].

He is remembered on the Halifax Parish Church South African War Memorial, and on West View Park War Memorial

He was employed by Mackintosh's, and worked in Middlesborough.

In [Q1] 1907, he married Ruth Chance in Halifax.

They lived at 13 Brunswick Court, Halifax.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed in the Dardanelles [7th August 1915] (aged 24).

He is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli [117-119], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on All Saints' War Memorial, Dudwell, and on the Memorial at John Mackintosh & Sons Limited

[18??-1916] He was educated at the Blue Coat School, Halifax.

During World War I, he served with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed in action [1st November 1916].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Blue Coat School Memorial, and on the Halifax Parish Church Church Members (WWI) Memorial

Binns, William
[1???-18??] Surveyor of the Halifax & Rochdale Turnpike.

On 11th February 1835, as he was returning over Blackstone Edge from Rochdale, he was attacked by four men

in the garb of navigators or excavators

They dragged him from his horse, tore away his smallclothes and robbed him of a purse marked WB, two £5 notes, 3 sovereigns, some silver and other small items. One of the villains gathered up a large stone which he dashed upon Mr Binns's head, intending to deprive him of life. They decamped across the moors and Mr Binns pursued. He was conveyed home by a coach which appeared shortly afterwards. No serious consequences were anticipated

On 8th August 1902, he married Agnes Hancock [1878-1971] at United Methodist Church, Queens Road.

He was buried at the Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France [II F 13], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at John Mackintosh & Sons Limited
