In the 1860s, the Ripponden Post Office was next to the Queen Hotel, Ripponden.

Miss Bradley worked here and was the first postmistress of Ripponden


Question: Can anyone tell me which of the Bradley sisters was postmistress at Ripponden? Was it Mary, Emma, Hannah Maria, or Elizabeth?

[18??-19??] Physician at Hebden Bridge [1895]. He was amongst those who set up the St John's Ambulance Brigade, Hebden Bridge

Bradley, Emma
[1836-1909] Daughter of John Bradley.

She married (1) Joshua Riley.

She married (2) Milford Fearnley.

Emma died in Harrogate [6th September 1909]. Probate was granted to Joseph Hanson (bank manager) and John Henry Helliwell (solicitor)

[1848-1893] Born in Almondbury.

She married Joseph Henry Scott Finlinson.

She died of peritonitis. She was buried at All Saints' Church, Dudwell

Bradley, Ernest
[1894-1918] Son of Emma & Herbert Bradley of Boothtown.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 10th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

He died of wounds in Italy [16th June 1918] (aged 24).

He was buried at the Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension [2 D 6].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

Bradley, Father Michael
[1865-1925] Priest at Church of the Sacred Heart & St Bernard's Church, Halifax [1905].

He supported a mission chapel at a room in the Assembly Rooms in Woolshops, to serve the large Irish community living in the Woolshops area.

In the 1920s, he established St Patrick's Church, Halifax in a room at a mill in Well Lane

Born in Elland [17th September 1884].

He was a cotton piecer [1901] / a cotton twiner [1910].

On 2nd November 1907, he married Sarah Ann Rothwell [1880-1914] at Elland Parish Church.


Sarah Ann was the daughter of David Rothwell

The family lived in Elland.

Sarah Ann died in 1914.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died as a POW in Lemberg, Galicia. [19th May 1917].

He was buried at the Mons (Bergen) Communal Cemetery [IV B 8].

He is remembered on Elland War Memorial.

After the deaths of Sarah Ann [1914] and Harry, grandfather David Rothwell was appointed guardian of their daughter Winifred Mabel

Around October 1633, James and Susan, together with James, John and Henry Murgatroyd, appeared before the Council of the North on charges of unspecified ... 

divers offences and misdemeanours by them committed in the chapel, chapel porch and chapel yard of Luddenden, in our county of York

They were fined and sentenced to

upon the Sabbath day in the said chapel immediately after divine service to make public acknowledgement of the said offences and misdemeanours by them committed against God and His holy religion in that holy place, and should likewise every one of them in a sorrowful manner ask forgiveness of God, the congregation, the rector [?] and his people

and then the group was

convented and proceeded against before the Lord Archbishop of York and other commissioners for Causes Ecclesiastical within the province of York for the same misdemeanours committed by them in the chapel before mentioned and in the church porch and in the churchyard of the said chapel

and subsequently

excommunicated for the space of 2 years

and ordered

to perform public penance in the chapel of Luddenden and in the Parish Church of Halifax upon several Sundays

He was a Police Constable in Elland [joined the force in 1871].

In 1876, he married Sarah Ann Foulds [1849-1902] in Todmorden.

He was landlord of the Holroyd Arms, Ripponden [1841, 1845, 1851] / landlord of the Queen Hotel, Ripponden [1861] / a farmer of 20 acres [1861] / a farmer of 26 acres [1871].

On 28th May 1832, he married Elizabeth Riley [1811-1875] at Halifax Parish Church.


Elizabeth was Matron to the scholars at Rishworth Charity School [1861]

In 1861, daughters Emma & Hannah Maria were at the Queens Hotel, Ripponden.

Living with them [in 1871] were Benjamin Whittle and family, and Orlando Hinchliffe and family.

In 1881, he was a retired inn keeper, living in Halifax with daughter Emma who was a Hotel Keeper.

He died at the Golden Plough, Halifax [7th November 1885]

[1898-1918] Son of Annie Hetty & Arthur Bradley of 42 Catherine Slack, Halifax.

He (possibly) worked for Crossley's Carpets.

During World War I, he enlisted [December 1916], and served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion Leinster Regiment.

He was killed in action [18th June 1918] (aged 20).

He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial [10], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Crossley's Carpets

In [Q2] 1916, he married Maud Ethel Cousins in Halifax.

They lived at 65 Rochdale Road, Greetland.

During World War I, he served as a Rifleman with the King's Royal Rifle Corps.

He died in Halifax [27th November 1918] (aged 31).

He is remembered on a CWGC headstone at Stoney Royd Cemetery [J B 88A]

He married Alice [15??-1609].

In his will [14th March 1599], he gave a pair of looms, a press, a great ark, and two pairs of walker shears to each of his sons. The rest of his property went to his wife Alice.

Nicholas was buried at Halifax [10th April 1600].

Alice was buried [21st September 1609]

[1753-1833] Local architect.

He began working as a joiner.

His work includes Warley House, the Square Chapel [1772], and the Piece Hall [1775].

He produced the drawings for Crow Nest Mansion.

He was one of the people who advanced money for the construction of Halifax New Market in 1790, and a trustee of the Halifax Market Company.

In 1792, he was appointed superintendent surveyor to the Calder & Hebble Navigation Company.

He had an office at 10 Union Street, Halifax [1829].

He was buried at Square Independent Chapel, Halifax and a plaque in his memory has been erected [1999] on the east wall of the Chapel, above his gravestone

He was recorded in 1868 [?], when he signed a public notice which cautioned the public against

the disgraceful practices

which took place during the Elland Tide

During World War II, he enlisted [September 1939], and he served as a Driver with the 6 Sub. Park, 2 Corps Ammunition Park Royal Army Service Corps.

He died 27th May 1940 (aged 37).

He was buried at the Nieuwpoort Communal Cemetery [III 5].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance
