In 1966, the business moved to Canal Works, Sowerby Bridge.

In 1980, the business moved to Clough Works, Bolton Brow

Son of Edmund Dyson.

Born in Huddersfield.

An early member of the local Dyson family.

He had paper mills in Halifax.

In 1766, he became insolvent and was forced to assign over his Halifax paper mills and all his other properties to his chief creditor, John Edwards. Further, Edwards had Eli imprisoned in York Castle for debt. Eli's son, Daniel temporarily saved the situation by eloping with Edwards's only daughter, Sarah, and marrying her in Scotland.

On 26th June 1730, he married Barbury / Barbara Fourness [1705-1766] in Halifax.

He never married.

He and his brother, John, lived at Brian Royd Hall, Greetland from about 1822 until their deaths.

He left a personal estate of £61,942 17/8d.

He was a worsted spinning oiler [1911] / employed by Dempster's.

During World War I, he volunteered [29th November 1915], and served as a Private / Bomber with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died in the arms of his brother Willie (of the RAMC) [3rd May 1917].

He is remembered on the Arras Memorial [6], on Elland War Memorial, and on the Memorial at All Saints' Church, Elland.

His brother Leonard also died in the War. They were in the same regiment, and died on the same day, in the same battle

[1864-1935] Son of Edwards Dyson.

Between 1885 and 1889 he sailed around the world. In Central America, he acquired a terracotta head of the Gulf Coast Classic Period which is now in the Museum and Art Gallery in Exeter.

In 1910, he was vicar of Holy Trinity, Hereford.

In 1910/1911, he and Arthur Henry Daniels of Hereford, filed a patent relating to

saddle tool-bags for cycles

He served with the 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.

He died 12th September 1884, and was interred with military honours at The Cemetery, Baroda, East India.

He is remembered on the family grave at St Stephen's Church, Copley

After his parents' deaths, he took over at the Thornhill Arms, Rastrick [1st September 1911].

Frank died at the Greyhound, Rastrick [1st February 1915]; his sister Ellen was the landlady there. Probate records show that he left effects valued at £2,005 6/8d. Probate was granted to Ellen Holmes (widow).

He died 22nd October 1916 (aged 17).

Dyson, Sir Frank Watson
[1868-1939] Son of Rev Watson Dyson of North Parade Baptist Church.

Born in Leicestershire.

He was educated at Heath Grammar School, Bradford Grammar School, and Cambridge University.

He was a mathematician and an astronomer and worked on stellar motion – providing the first evidence for the rotation of the galaxy – and time determination.

He was Chief Assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory [1894-1904], and travelled abroad to observe eclipses in Portugal [1900], Sumatra [1901] and Tunisia [1905]. He was Astronomer Royal for Scotland 1906-10 and Professor of Practical Astronomy at Edinburgh University. On 10th September 1910, he was appointed 9th Astronomer Royal for England and held the post until 1933.

He was Fellow and Vice-President of the Royal Society and President of the British Astronomical Association [1916-1918].

[1793-18??] On 28th June 1827, he and Thomas Gledhill were drinking in the Jolly Sailor, Elland, and began to make fun of a disabled man called John Bottomley who was
touched with liquor

They followed Bottomley and as he began to climb the hill on his way home to Rastrick. They knocked his sticks from under him, causing him to fall to the ground, and turned him on his back.

One man held him by the throat, and the other took 2 half-sovereigns, and 20/- in silver from. Dyson kicked him almost senseless, and threw him into a ditch, where they left him.

At 1:30 am, Gledhill and Dyson went to another pub and spent freely. They were seen to have blood on their clothes. Gledhill said that he had hurt himself with a stone the previous day, and Dyson said that he had had a nose bleed.

The following morning, they were arrested.

At their trial on 4th August 1827, a judgment of death was record against both men

I have found that he was a brass finisher by trade and played cricket for Low Moor in the Bradford League.

He was selected to play for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, making his debut against Sussex in Hove on the 15th August 1887. He scored 6 in the first innings and 2 in the second in a drawn match.

On the 18th August he played again, this time against Surrey at The Kennington Oval where he was out for a duck in both innings. Yorkshire lost by an innings and 10 runs and that was the end of his county cricket career – short and sweet and a batting average of 2

On 6th October 1810, Alexander Turner and James King borrowed £7,000 for 1 year from John Edwards of Northowram Hall. The loan was secured as a mortgage against land and property owned by the pair; much of this was at Blackshawhead. By 1824, the loan had not been paid back, and Thomas, Edwards's beneficiary, was pressing for payment. When Turner's daughter Mary, wife of Rev James Armytage Rhodes, inherited the estate, she insisted that her husband pay the debt on her behalf. Rev Rhodes paid back the loan in full – plus interest – out of his own pocket, on the condition that all documentation relating to the matter be destroyed.

Thomas died at Everton, Lancashire [12th August 1843].

On 14th April 1864, Mary Ann killed the 2 children – Mary [then aged 2 years 7 months] and Archibald [aged 5 months] – by cutting their throats with a razor.

Afterwards, she gave herself up to the village policeman, saying

I have tried to be like others, and I cannot.

I have killed my two children.

I have taken them out of their misery, lock me up.

I loved them.

They are in heaven

Whilst she was detained in prison, she said that she had intended to kill the children and then herself, but having put down the razor to lay the children on the floor, she was horrified and could not pick it up again.

At the inquest on 15th April 1864, the Court heard that she was an affectionate mother, but the family had been in straitened circumstances for some time and she was uneasy in her mind.

Witnesses included William Ambler, PC Bracewell, Lydia Aspinall, and Dr Henry Pritchett

The Coroner's jury returned a verdict of wilful murder.

The jury on her trial at the Leeds Assizes in August were of opinion that she was in an unsound state of mind, and returned a verdict of Not Guilty, and she was ordered to be confined during Her Majesty's Pleasure.
