Question: From similar cases, it is possible that Lawton was an overlooker at a mill – such as Crossley's Carpets – and that Arthur was a young worker who died after being physically assaulted at his work.

Does anyone know the story behind Arthur's death?

[1892-1915] In [Q1] 1914, he married Ada Clegg in Halifax.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died 5th May 1915 (aged 23).

He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium [20], on Clifton War Memorial, on the Memorial at Saint John's Church, Clifton, and in the book Clifton War Memorial

After his death, Ada married Mr Bell, and lived at 19 Gathorne Street, Brighouse.

[1???-1624] Son of John Drake. A member of the Drake family of Horley Green.

[1622-1678] MA.

Son of Nathan Drake. He was expelled from St John's College Cambridge for refusing to take the covenant. He fought in the Royalist army during the Civil War, and took part in the Siege of Newark. He had to pay decimation. At the Restoration, he was created DD and became Vicar of Pontefract

In April 1857, he was charged by Sarah Elizabeth Kitchin [aged 22] on 2 charges:

He had paid his addresses to her between 6 and 7 years, made promises of marriage, seduced her from the path of virtue, and a child, born in March 1857, was the result.

He had earlier induced her to meet him near Holdsworth's Mill, Halifax with a view to killing the unborn child.

She clung so tightly to him that he could not shake her off. She threatened to inform of him, but her begged her not to do so, and again promised to marry her and give her some houses after confinement. He put 20 sovereigns into her hand, a gold chain round her neck, and a gold watch in her bosom. He wrote several love letters to her and asked to meet her on the following Sunday, even though, at the time of writing them, he was

united in matrimony at the register office to another female

He was ordered to pay £3 4/6d for expenses and 2/6d per week afterwards for the support of the child.

Sam took over as beerhouse keeper at the Victoria & Albert, Boothtown [1909, 1911, 1913].

Hannah Rebecca died on 2nd November 1909.

On 25th February 1913, Sam married (2) Martha Emma Bower [1888-1962] at Halifax Parish Church.

He married Mary [1745-1799].

Mary died 14th April 1799 (aged 54).

Thomas died 6th June 1819 (aged 76).

His will requested that he be buried next to his parents.

On 2nd July 1803, he married Sarah Briggs [1773-1853] at St Martin in the Fields, London.

Sarah died 14th March 1853. Thomas died 10th September 1862.

The couple were buried at St Anne's Church, Southowram

Drake, Thomas
[1846-1???] Dyer in a Halifax silk mill.

He and Eliza Nelson [1847-1???] worked at the same mill and had lived as man and wife, for a time, before they split up after an argument. Eliza went to live in lodgings in Nelson Street, Halifax.

On the morning of 6th December 1864, Eliza was on her way to work when she met Drake and they went for a walk along the canal at Caddy Field.

He threw Eliza into the canal and ran off when others saw her struggling in the water. She was eventually rescued by John Furness, a stone cutter, who had been working nearby.

Drake threw himself into the canal but was rescued by 2 men.

He was charged with attempted murder at the Magistrates' Court and ordered to stand trial at the Winter Assizes.

At the Leeds Assizes on 23rd December 1864, he was found guilty of attempted murder, and was sentenced to 15 years' penal servitude

[1888-1917] Son of Thomas Drake.

Born at Dean Farm, Triangle.

He was a boiler coverer and travelled around England with his work / a boiler and steam pipe coverer (for ship builders), boarding in Birkenhead [1911].

He lived at 18 Colin Street, Hanson Lane, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [Whitsuntide 1915], and served as a Private with the 22nd Battalion Manchester Regiment.

He died 14th March 1917 (aged 28).

He was buried at Gommecourt British Cemetery No.2, Heburterne, France [V H 29].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

He is remembered on Elland War Memorial, on the Memorial at Blackley Particular Baptist Church, and on the Memorial at Saint Andrew's Church, Stainland.

His brother-in-law Jonathan Turner also died in the War

He was a porter for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway [1911] / a billiard marker [1914].

He lived at 6 Victoria Road, Sowerby Bridge [1914].

During World War I, he enlisted [9th August 1914], and served as a Sergeant with B Battery 95th Brigade Royal Horse Artillery & Royal Field Artillery.

He was killed in action [5th April 1918].

He was buried at Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, France [II C 2].

After his death, his mother wrote to the Army asking for any of Walter's personal effects; she got the reply:

No effects were recovered from his person or kit, owing to the fact that the man was struck by a shell which damaged his body to such an extent that things could not be found

The Drake family of Ashday
In the early 1700s, the family lived at Fixby.

In 1792, Ashday Hall was conveyed to William Drake and his wife Phoebe Holdsworth.

The family owned property in Brighouse, including Hangram Field and land at Lane Head.

Members of the family included Joseph Drake and William Drake

The Drake family of Halifax
The family were important in Horley Green and Shibden.

William Drake is recorded at Shibden in 1275.

This branch of the family is said to be descended from Devon – the Drakes of Ashe – which included Sir Francis Drake. Tradition also says that a Drake brought the skills of woollen manufacture to the district from Devon.

John de Schipeden changed his name to Drake.
