[18??-18??] In 1869, he took over the dyeing business of John Burgess.

He moved to Calder Dye Works, Rastrick and traded variously as Burgess & Sons, Thomas Burgess, and Rhodes Sowden.

In 1888, the business was acquired by W. Grandage & Company

[1866-1908] Of Brighouse.

Son of Albert Hepworth.

He may be related to Isaac Hepworth who emigrated to Australia.

Followed his parents as landlord of the Sportsman, Rastrick [1897-1899].

He was landlord of the Railway Hotel, Hebden Bridge [1905, 1908].

In 1885, he married Sarah Ann Kenyon [1869-1905] from Brighouse, in Halifax.

[1937-1992] Son of Frank Hepworth.

Born in Leeds.

He was a racing driver / winner of the British Hill Climb Championship [1969, 1971] / in business at Princess Works, Rastrick.

In 19??, he bought Calder Bank Mills, Rastrick and used it for his businesses

  • Stovit – Stove Enameling and Shotblasting
  • Hepworth Domestics – Reconditioning domestic washing machines.

    There is a family story that he made his own washing machines under the name of GayDay

  • He also ran his race team from one of the annexes of the mill

He bought Cliffe Hill, Lightcliffe [19??]

He married Margaret Shaw.

Hepworth, Dyson
[18??-1???] Landlord of the Horse & Jockey Beerhouse, Brighouse [1892].

He was charged with having his house open during prohibited hours on Sunday 20th November 1892, after Sergeant Copping and PC Morley found George Bancroft seated in the beerhouse with a pint of beer in front of him. Hepworth was fined £1 13/- plus costs

Hepworth, Frederick
[1864-19??] An insurance agent at Brighouse.

In 1899, he pleaded guilty to forging and uttering 2 claims on the Royal Liver Friendly Society. He had submitted 2 proposals forms for the life of one Walter Walker. It was said that Walker was living in a house in Elland, whereas he was, in fact, a man of intemperate habits living in the Halifax Workhouse. When Walker died, Hepworth received payment on the first policy, and subsequently repaid it to the Society. Hepworth was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour

Architect and surveyor. He was essentially the

Builder of Brighouse

He established a practice which became Hepworth & Son.

In 1830, he married Elizabeth [1810-1877] from Nottinghamshire.

Brighouse-based architect and partner in Hepworth & Son.


In 1878, H. Kershaw – possibly Henry Kershaw – and George Hepworth drew up plans for Bradford Council's Bowling Park, Bradford. Theirs was the winning entry
 

He was an artist and drew a couple of postcards depicting life in Brighouse in the early 20th century.

He was a keen photographer, and a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and left an excellent record of parts of Brighouse in the 1880s.

In 1885, he wrote Brighouse, its scenery & antiquities.

A collection of his glass photographic plates were held at Brighouse Museum.

Emma, of Halifax, was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, the daughter of James Addison, sailor.

She took over from her husband as hotel proprietor at the Temperance Hotel, Northgate [1901]

He was brass finisher/innkeeper [1874] / beerhouse keeper at the Freemasons' Arms, Brighouse [1881]

In October 1881, he was fined 19/6d for serving beer to a drunken person, John Greenwood, delver of Southowram. Witnesses said that Greenwood was not drunk, but was of weak intellect. Greenwood was ordered to pay 18/6d or go to prison for 14 days

On 16th April 1874, he married Jane Dawson [1858-1912] in Brighouse.

The official notice of 1769 for his arrest described him as

MATTHEW HEPWORTH, late of Ovenden, in the same Parish, Butcher, about 40 years old, 5ft 7 ins high, rather slender, a little pock-broke, wears his own Hair, which is of a reddish Colour, and almost straight

[1893-1917] Son of George Hepworth.

He was a member of St Paul's Church, King Cross & cricket club / educated at Trinity School & Heath Grammar School / educated at Holy Trinity School & Heath Grammar School / a member of King Cross Constitutional Club / a cabinet maker [1911] / apprenticed to Walter Denton's of Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [October 1914], and served as a Corporal with the 1st/5th Battalion King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment).

He was killed by a shell at Passchendaele [31st July 1917] (aged 24).


Quoting the letter received by his parent, the Halifax Courier reported that he was killed on the 2nd of August
 

He was buried at the Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery [II C 18].

He is remembered on the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Paul's Church, King Cross, on the Memorial at Heath Grammar School, and on the Memorial at Holy Trinity Boys' School, Halifax

Hepworth, William Fairburn
[1843-1882] At the Yorkshire Assizes in August 1880, James McGowan was charged with wounding Hepworth with intent to main him by striking him on the hand with a knife at Brighouse on 3rd July 1880.

The Jury found McGowan guilty of unlawfully wounding. He was sentenced to 2 months' imprisonment.

Hepworth died in Halifax [Q1 1882] (aged 39) 

Hepworth, Wilmott
[1896-1916] Son of James Hepworth.

Born in Credit Forkes, Canada.

He was a factory doffer [1911] / employed by Hartley & Sugden Limited.

He lived at 20 Back Street, Halifax [1916].

During World War I, he enlisted [31st August 1914], and served as a Private with the 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.

He was wounded in France and hospitalised in Newcastle.

On recovering, he was sent to Egypt, then to France.

He was killed whilst getting his breakfast [10th October 1916] (aged 20).

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France [3A & 3B], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Halifax Parish Church Church Members (WWI) Memorial
