In 1911, he was a pupil at an (unnamed) school at 1 St George's Road, Harrogate [Headmaster Edgar Lawn].

On 10th July 1918, [age 18 years and 185 days] of Green Hayes, Halifax enlisted [at Halifax] with the 2nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

He died in 1974

Youngest son of Charles Horner.

After the death of their father [1896], Harry & his brother James carried on the Charles Horner Limited business, in partnership with their cousin Charles William Leach.

He became Chairman of the family business after the death of his brother James in 1913.

On 13th April 1897, he married Esther Ann Bailey [1873-12th May 1921] in Halifax

He was a greengrocer's errand boy half time [1901] / a percher (woollen mill) [1911] / a loom tuner [1914] / employed by Edwards & Rawson, Sowerby Bridge.

During World War I, he enlisted in Halifax [6th October 1914], and served with the 1st/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was held in reserve [until 10th September 1915] when he went to the Front. He sailed from Southampton to Le Havre [29th June 1916] aboard SS La Marguerite. He was promoted to Lance Corporal [1st August 1916].

He was killed in action [3rd September 1916].

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France [6A & 6B]

He worked for R. Wilkinson.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the Base Mechanical Transport Depot Royal Army Service Corps.

He died of dysentery in hospital in Salonika [10th September 1918] (aged 23).

He was buried at the Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery [1523].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.

His death was reported in the Halifax Courier [21st September 1918]

He served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was posted to France [13th April 1916] aboard SS Matheran – which was sunk of the coast of France [1917].

He was killed in action [30th August 1918].

He is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial [6].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.

His death was reported in the Halifax Courier [21st September 1918].

After his death, Ellen was awarded a widow's pension of 25/5d per week

[1902-1973] Daughter of James Dobson Horner.

Born at Green Hayes, Halifax.

She was a sculptor.

She was educated at Halifax High School / Grovelly Manor, Bournemouth / Leeds College of Art [1920].

She was a friend and contemporary of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

Her work includes various religious works, a bust of Phyllis Bentley, a bronze figure of Vernon W. Wanklyn [1930], a figure of Mrs Patrick Crossley [1930], a bronze group of the Brontë sistersCharlotte, Emily and Anne – which won the Leeds Gold Medal [1951], and a head of Sir John Barbirolli.

In 1937, she abandoned art and turned her attention to the welfare of the blind, Red Cross nursing, and animal welfare.

Around 1952, she studied modelling at Leeds, and became a member of staff at the Halifax School of Art.

He taught art at Heath Grammar School and painted in his spare time.

He had his studio and a drawing school at Bond Street.

In the 1820s, he painted Marian's View, a view of Shibden valley for Anne Lister.

His collection of lithographed drawings of Buildings in the Town and Parish of Halifax [1835] records the area before industrialisation.

He was a generous member of Salem Methodist New Connexion Chapel, North Parade.

Horner, Joshua
[1812-1881] Son of John Horner.

Halifax-born artist and portrait-painter.

He painted the portrait of Anne Lister which hangs in Shibden Hall.

Joshua travelled with a Halifax architect friend to France & Italy [leaving England on 8th August 1840]. There were in Geneva [September 1840], Milan [October 1840] and Rome [by January 1841].

He wrote letters home to his father, and with his agreement & that of his father, Henry Martin took extracts from Joshua's letters & published them in the Halifax Express. By March 1841, Martin had ceased being the proprietor & editor of the Halifax Express, and some time later, he decided to publish the extracts himself – these are currently held by the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

After his father's death [1867], Joshua dedicated a fine stained glass window in his memory at Salem Chapel along with the Horner Charity bequest for

the poor of Salem

He never married.

He lived at 11 Bond Street, Halifax, with Sarah Hellowell [b  1824] (cook/domestic servant) [1881].

Joshua died 28th September 1881 Probate records show that he left a personal estate valued at £1,588 2/9d.

The will was proved by William John Townsend of Wellington Street, Stockport (Methodist New Connexion Minister)  and John Styring Lee of Barum House, Halifax

He was an weaver in Ovenden [1837] / a butcher / an inn keeper at 10 Bridge Street, Halifax [1841] / landlord of the Saddle, Halifax [1845].

On 27th September 1838, he married Matilda [1810-1???] in Halifax.


Matilda was the daughter of Mr Hirst – could her father be Joseph Hirst who was landlord of the Saddle, Halifax [1837, 1843]?

She was the widow of James Mitchell and had 3 children
