He died 25th August 1918 (aged 29).

He lived there until his death [17th February 1956], and his widow continued to live there until 1968. Probate records show that he left effects valued at £284,170 10/11d.

Probate was granted to his widow Kate, Edward Hoyle (company director), Sir Hereward Clare Lees (baronet), and Frances Joan Hoyle (married woman).

There is a memorial to him in Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot Number 1645].

His sister, Kate, placed a seat at Trinity College Cambridge in her brother's memory, and paid for National Trust woodland to be planted at Busk Wood, Little Langdale, Cumbria in his memory.

In 1921, he was awarded a posthumous British War Medal which Kate received on behalf of their mother

During World War II, he was called-up [October 1939], and served as a Private with the 2nd/7th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was reported missing and assumed to have died [11th June 1940] (aged 21).

He is remembered on the Dunkirk Memorial [62], and on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

[1885-1917] Son of Sutcliffe Lee.

He was a member (brother) of the Halifax Central Lodge of the International Order of Good Templars / a member of West Vale Liberal Club / an apprentice blacksmith [1901] / a postman in West Vale [for 10 years] / a reservist.

He lived with his cousin Mrs Illingworth at Cromwell Street, Halifax.

He was engaged to Miss Edith Dyson of 100 Haugh Shaw Road, Halifax.

During World War I, he was called-up [5th August 1914], and served as a Sergeant with the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).

He was wounded once.

He was killed in action north of Béthune [28th May 1917] (aged 32).

He was buried at the Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe [I Q 25].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Halifax Post Office.

He and Miss Dyson were to be married when he was next home on leave

He was a partner in W. & R. K. Lee Limited / merchant & cotton spinner [1871]

He married Hannah [1837-1892].

The family lived at 7 Winding Road Cocoa House, Halifax.

After William's death, Mary went to work in Sheffield, and the children were resident scholars at Crossley Orphanage.
