He was a supporter of the Halifax Auxiliary Bible Society.

In 1786, he married Ann, daughter of Thomas Milne.

On 25th February 1893, he married Mary Ann Sutcliffe [1866-1943] at Halifax Paris Church.

Moss, Charles Walter
[1858-1941] Born in Hebden Bridge.

He was an insurance agent [1887].

On 12th June 1887, he married Elizabeth Ann Sunderland [1861-1939] at Hebden Bridge.

Moss, Detective George
[18??-19??] On 13th January 1899, Joe Smith [24], a boiler maker, shot Moss at Halifax, with intent to murder him. Moss and Detective Crowther had gone to the Railway Hotel, Halifax to make enquiries about a jacket which was missing from the home of Smith's father. Smith produced a pistol from his pocket and fired, just missing Moss. The jury found Smith guilty of shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and he was sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude

Born in Halifax [15th August 1833].

He was a teacher at brother George's Slater Bank School [1851] / a schoolmaster at his father's Hebden Bridge school [1861] / a schoolmaster at Slater Bank School [1870]

On 30th December 1858, he married (1) Hannah Lord [1832-1867] at St Chad's, Rochdale.

Emma & James were born in Elland.

They married in Halifax [1898].

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 9th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

He died 27th May 1918.

He is remembered on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France, and on Elland War Memorial

[1854-1926] Son of Hague Moss.

Born in Hebden Bridge.

He was a fustian manufacturer in Todmorden / a fustian dyer & finisher [1911]

He was a director of the Hare Spinning Company Limited and cut the first sod when the Hare Mill was built.

In [Q2] 1876, he married Ada Stansfield in Todmorden District.


Ada was the daughter of James Stansfield

[17??-18??] Cotton manufacturer at New House Mill, Ovenden which he built around 1800. He continued in business after the mill was dismantled in 1820.

He was a founder member of the Halifax Quarterly Choral Society.

He promoted a performance of Accepted Widdop's oratorio Joseph to raise funds for a memorial to the composer

He was schoolmaster at Thorn Bank School, Wadsworth [1871]

Moss, Jane
[1806-1891] Daughter of Rev Anthony Moss.

Born in Halifax.

She and one of her sisters ran a boarding school at their home, Field Head, Ovenden [1829, 1838].

In 1860, Illingworth National School was enlarged at the sisters' expense, and separate departments for boys and girls were established.

She endowed St George's Church, Ovenden and was a benefactor to Illingworth Church

Moss, Ralph Sunderland
[1893-1915] Son of Charles Walter Moss.

Born in Hebden Bridge.

He was an organ builder [1911].

During World War I, he enlisted for service in Huddersfield, and served as a Private with the 1st/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed in action [16th August 1915].

He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium

Moss, Sam Smithies
[1873-1911] Born in Sowerby Bridge.

He was landlord of the Ivy Beerhouse, Elland.

On 3rd November 1900, he was charged with keeping a bagatelle board without a licence. PC Cook had gone into the pub and saw millhand Herbert Saville and labourer Eddy Dyson playing bagatelle for money.

For not having a licence, Moss was fined 5/-, and for permitting gaming, he was fined 10/- plus costs. Saville and Dyson were each fined 10/- plus costs for aiding and abetting.

He left to run the Yorkshire House pub in Hulme, Lancashire.

He died 27th February 1911

Moss, Samuel
[1860-1940] Halifax master decorator, upholsterer and furnisher. Founded S. Moss & Sons in 1885.

His son, Herbert Moss, also joined for the company

He was educated at Elland National School / an overlooker at Riverside Mill, Elland.

In 1938, he married Annie Hartley [1908-1981].

During World War II, he enlisted [July 1943], and served as a Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).
