He was one of the subscribers to John Horner's book Buildings in the Town & Parish of Halifax [1835].

On 17th February 1819, he married Jane Lapage at St Peter's Church, Leeds.

He died 26th December 1886.

He was buried at All Saints' Church, Dudwell. Probate records show that he left a personal estate valued at £28,788 17/- [Resworn £28,741 7/-]. Probate was granted to his brothers Priestley Haigh & Henry Percy

Halifax solicitor. He qualified in August 1903. He was with Hill & Norris [1934].

He was Coroner for the West Riding, the Halifax Division of the Honour of Pontefract, and the county boroughs of Halifax and Huddersfield [1907, 1936].

He was honorary treasurer of the Halifax Incorporated Law Society Limited [1917].

He was Clerk to the Governors of Abbott's Ladies' Home, Skircoat Green [1929].

He died in the Royal Halifax Infirmary [13th January 1948].

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £24,730 12/-.

Probate was granted to Christopher Lacy Baldwin and Arthur Charles Akeroyd.

[1826-1898] Of Sowerby Bridge.

Son of Charles Norris.

Born 26th July 1826.

He was a chemist [1851] / a manufacturing chemist [1867, 1871, 1881] / a solicitor / partner in Norris, Foster & England / partner in Norris & Foster [1868] / Chairman of the Sowerby Bridge Local Board [15th April 1862-15th April 1864].

Built Rockcliffe, Halifax around 1871 and lived there until around 1884.

On 12th July 1859, he married Jane Hope at Halifax Parish Church.


Jane was the youngest daughter of Rev John Hope

Norris, James Edward
[1793-1842] Son of William Norris.

Halifax attorney.

He was at South Gate House, Ward's End (conveyancer) [1822] / 18 Westgate, Halifax [1829] / Westgate, Halifax [1834].

He was one of the subscribers to John Horner's book Buildings in the Town & Parish of Halifax [1835].

On 4th October 1815, he married Mary Lapage at St Peter's Church, Leeds.

He lived at Ward's End, Halifax and then at Savile Hall [in 1841] which he leased from Charles Harrison Batley for a term of 14 years.

In 1835, Batley's widow inherited the estate and sold the Hall to Norris for £1,928. Norris extended the Hall in the 1830s.

In 1835, he sued the inhabitants of Agbrigg and Morley, for the destruction of windows, furniture and pictures at his home, Savile Hall, during the window-breaking riots on 6th January 1835. The Jury awarded him damages of £799, against the £1093 19/9½d which Norris had claimed.

James died in Halifax [9th September 1842].

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £14,000.

After his death, his widow Mary lived at Savile Hall for a short time.

In 1851, she was living at West House, Halifax.

She died 14th June 1872 (aged 84)  and was buried at Hollington Church, near St Leonards-on-Sea.

The epitaph on the family memorial in Halifax Parish Church is recorded in the book Monumental & Other Inscriptions

Norris, James Edward
[1818-1884] JP, DL.

Son of James Edward Norris.

On 31st March 1864, he was elected Town Clerk of Halifax, at a salary of £800 per annum.

On 3rd February 1869, the Town Council presented him with 300 guineas in recognition of the valuable and special services rendered by him to the Corporation.

In 1871, he was succeeded by A. C. Foster.

In 1853, he married Sarah Anne Ormerod [1829-1???] in Ross on Wye.

Norris, Leslie
[1919-1944] Son of Ann & John Norris of Luddendenfoot, Yorkshire.

In [Q4] 1941, he married May Easton in Calder District.

They lived in Luddendenfoot.

During World War II, he served as a Private with the 1st Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment.

He died 19th June 1944 (aged 25).

He was buried at the Bayeux War Cemetery [XXV E 14].

He is remembered on Luddendenfoot War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Luddendenfoot Working Men's Club

She lived at West House, Halifax [1844].

On 19th September 1844, she married (1) Ottiwell Tomlin at Halifax Parish Church.


Ottiwell was a solicitor in Richmond, North Yorkshire, and son of Ottiwell Tomlin, solicitor

Ottiwell died in Reeth [27th December 1844].

He was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Richmond.

In [Q1] 1864, Mary married (2) John West Hugall [1807-1880] in Halifax.

John died [Q4] 1880 (aged 74) 

In [Q4] 1881, Mary married (3) Alfred Westley [1805-1883] in Hastings.

Alfred died in Hastings [Q4 1883] (aged 78)  The widowed Mary lived at 77 London Road, St Leonards-on-Sea.

She died at St Leonards-on-Sea [5th April 1886] Probate records show that she left a personal estate valued at £596 14/6d.

Probate was granted to her siblings Ellen & Charles Musgrave

[1848-1921] Son of Charles Wallace Norris.

He was an assistant at a chemical works [1881, 1891].

On 21st April 1874, he married (1) Charlotte Hannah Louisa.


Charlotte Hannah Louisa was the daughter of James Inglis
 

Charlotte Hannah Louisa died 6th January 1875 (aged 31).

She was buried at All Saints' Church, Dudwell

In 1892, he married (2) Ada Francis Moran [1864-19??] at Paddington.

Julia died at Bedford Square, Brighton [7th July 1899].

Probate records show that she left effects valued at £21,439 16/- [Resworn £21,524 7/2d]. Probate was granted to William Costeker (esquire), Charles Costeker (solicitor), Henrietta Holdsworth (spinster), and Francis Green (esquire)

He was a chemist [1851] / a merchant [1861] / a manufacturing chemist [1867] / chemical manufacturer [1871].

On 15th April 1868, he married Jane Foster.

Administration was granted to her father Rev Edward Snepp.

[17??-18??] Merchant at Southgate, Halifax [1809]. He was an agent for the Royal Exchange Assurance Fire Office [1809]

Norris, William
[1734-1807] Born in Scotland. He was one of the people who advanced money for the construction of Halifax New Market in 1790, and a trustee of the Halifax Market Company.

On 10th March 1764, he married Mary Hillhouse [1735-1796] at Halifax Parish Church.

Born in Newbury, Berkshire.

He was educated at Charterhouse and Oxford.

He was Vicar of Almondbury and at Barnsley before becoming Archdeacon of Halifax [1906-1917].

In 1917, he was appointed Dean of York.

In 1925, he was appointed Dean of Westminster. In 1937, he officiated at the coronation of George VI.

On 17th April 1884, he married Mary Blanch Pott [1859-1940] in Wokingham.
