He was a stone delver & beer house keeper at the Rock, Southowram [1871] / a stone quarryman [1881] / a delver [1891]

On 9th September 1860, he (possibly) married Ann Bradley from Ripon, in Halifax.

Son of Henry Oates.

In the 1880s, he joined the worsted spinning business of his brother, Edwin James Oates, as Oates Brothers.

He never married.

Their younger sister Emma Eliza kept house for him and his brother Edwin James.

They lived at Prospect House, Halifax [1905].

He owned South Royde, Halifax at the time of his death.

In 1911, he and his sister Emma gave Bermerside to the town in memory of their late brother Edwin James. In addition £4,000 was set aside to start a convalescent home and form part of the Oates Trust Fund.

He died 6th August 1926 [aged 65].

There is a memorial to him in Christ Church, Pellon

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 1st/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed at Passchendaele [9th October 1917] (aged 24).

He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium [82-85 & 162A], and on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

She was orphaned in 1642.

She married her second cousin, Samuel Lister.

In 1881, Mary and children were at 64 New Street, Southowram.

He was landlord of the Who could a' thowt it, Southowram [1901]. He left – and Henry Kaye took over – but Oates returned shortly afterwards.

Born in Luddenden / Midgley [7th July 1899].

Baptised at St Mary's Church, Luddenden [14th December 1904].

He was employed by Thomas Kershaw, coal merchant.

He lived at Stocks Lane, Luddenden.

During World War I, he enlisted in Halifax, and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.

He was killed in action [3rd September 1918] after only 2 days at the Front.

He was buried at Targelle Ravine British Cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France [G 16].

He is remembered on Luddenden Working Men's Club Roll of Honour, on Luddenden & Midgley War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Saint Mary the Virgin, Luddenden

He and his brother James Holroyd established the leather business of Oates & Company.

In 1891, the widowed Mary Hannah (living on own means) and family were at the Barracks Tavern, 13 Charles Street, Halifax, with 26 lodgers.

In 1891, daughter Bertha was living at 14 New Town, Northowram, with her widowed grandmother Elizabeth Tidswell [aged 64] and a monthly nurse Elizabeth Fox [aged 59].

In 1901, the family were living at 14 Newtown, Halifax with Mary Hannah's mother Elizabeth Tidswell [aged 74].

In 1911, the family were living at 34 Fern Street, Halifax, and with them was granddaughter Nora Oates [aged 9]

He was pupil teacher in elementary school [1881] / assessor of rates [1891] / local assessor of taxes [1901] / Overseer at Prospect House, Southowram [1905] / incorporated insurance broker and estate agent at 10 Harrison Road, Halifax [1919].

In 1896, he married Emily Mallinson [1865-19??] in Halifax.

His two elder brothers Richard and John went into the iron foundry business, and initially James appears to join them. At the time of his marriage he is recorded as a bookkeeper (possibly)  at the iron foundry.

Later he decides to join up with brother Henry to form Oates & Company. In 1869, he left the partnership.

In 1871, he was a retired leather merchant [aged 49].

In 18??, he married Jane Johnson.

He was a quarryman [1881] / a stone delver [1891] / a farmer/quarry owner (own account) [1901] / partner in Joe Oates & Sons / (possibly) a partner in Oates & Taylor.

He died in an accident at his quarry. On 21st January 1911, the inquest was reported in a local paper

Joe Oates (60) Quarry Owner of The Royd, Southowram was killed in his own quarry. Joe Oates was described at the inquest as a Master Quarryman. The quarry which adjoined his house was a small one, owned by him and worked by himself, 3 sons and 2 labourers. The death occurred due to a fall of shale whilst they were trying to work a bed of stone. Mr Oates was buried under 3 feet of shale and had a broken back and two broken legs. HM Factory Inspector said that this was one of the worst cases he had known from personal risk and for the sake of the living it was time that the regulations for those working in such places were more strictly observed

He inherited his father's stone quarries, and became a quarry owner, and lime and stone merchant at Salterhebble. He was listed as a slate-merchant at Salterhebble [1809].

[1793-1831] Son of John Oates.

Born in Salterhebble.

He may have trained in Manchester. He became an architect and did much work on churches.

In 1819, he went into partnership with Thomas Pickersgill and his brother Matthew Oates as Oates, Pickersgill & Oates.

One of Oates's pupils – Joseph Aloysius Hansom – patented the Hansom Cab.

He was well-known for his Gothic style, and worked on several local buildings, including Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge, New Rooms, Halifax, Rishworth Grammar School, St James's Church, Halifax, (possibly) Holy Trinity Church, Halifax, Sowerby Vicarage [1827], All Saints' Church, Paddock, St Paul's Church, Huddersfield, and Huddersfield Infirmary

On 1st January 1816, he married Mary Chapman [1796-1871] at Manchester.

He was at 7 Union street, Halifax [1822].

He died during a cholera epidemic. After his death, his brother, Matthew Oates and Thomas Pickersgill completed his work – see Pickersgill & Oates.

He was buried at All Saints' Church, Paddock, Huddersfield which he designed and built. His epitaph reads:

Here lie the remains of John Oates of Springwood, Architect, who died May 16 1831 in the 37th year of his age. In private life he was a kind husband an affectionate father and a sincere friend. Under his superintendence the Infirmary and St Paul's Church, Huddersfield and this adjoining church were built

During World War II, he served as a Sick Berth Attendant with the Royal Navy aboard the shore station HMS Lanka, Ceylon.

He died 12th February 1944 (aged 21).

He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, England [87 1], and on the Memorial at Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge

He was buried at Ors British Cemetery, France [B 35], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Halifax Secondary School, and on the Memorial at Saint Matthew's Church, Lightcliffe.

He was awarded the Military Cross (posthumously) for

She had a son Tom Gascoigne [b 1884] by her previous marriage.

She was a hotel proprietor in Harrogate

 

He died at 111 Franklin Road, Harrogate [25th April 1911].

He was buried at Christ Church, Pellon [27th April 1911]
