[1???-18??] In December 1838, he was passing through a wood near Elland when he was attacked by 2 men, Brooke and Collingwood. He defended himself with his sword-stick and seriously injured Collingwood. Brooke tended Collingwood, attempting to staunch the flow of blood. The jury found both men guilty, but because of Collingwood's injuries and Brooke's humanity, the 2 were sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment instead of transportation for life

He is remembered on the family grave at Lister Lane Cemetery.

One of the gang who attacked Thomas Cockcroft and Robert Crossley in 1839. Rushworth had grabbed the horse which was pulling the trap.

At the trial on 5th March 1840, he was transported to Van Diemen's Land for 15 years. He was one of 259 convicts who left England on the Duncan [10th December 1840]

Born in Halifax.

He was a member of St Edward's Mission Church, Boothtown / a dyer's labourer [1911] / employed at Brookfoot Dyeworks / a boiler maker with Fleming's of Boothtown.

In 1911, he was living at 3 West View, Boothtown with:

  • sister Clara Rushworth [b 1881] who was a cotton warper
  • sister Minnie Birkbeck
  • brother-in-law Henry Birkbeck

In 1916, he married Mary Alice Southwell in Halifax.

They lived at

  • 90 St Peter's Street, Boothtown [1917]
  • 15 Lee Bank, Halifax

During World War I, he enlisted [27th March 1916], and he served as a Private with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He went to the Front [9th January 1917].

He was killed in action by shellfire in Seneschal farm sector, River Lys [7th May 1917] (aged 41).

He was buried at the Ecoust Military Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mien [II A 17]

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance
