[1905-1954] Son of Major Alfred Herbert Richardson.

He was an industrial chemist.

In 1929, he married Patricia Pearson in Halifax.

Children: Jean [1930-2002] who became a Doctor in Ireland, married and moved to the USA where she became a well-known Professor of Pathology

Richardson, Arthur
[1897-1916] Son of William Richardson.

He was a creeler (cotton) [1911] / working in a cotton mill at Dean Clough Mills.

During World War I, he enlisted [1915], and served as a Gunner with the Royal Navy.

He was killed in action [31st May 1916] (aged 19), when HMS Indefatigable was sunk in the Battle of Jutland.

In February 1916, he had gone home on leave, taking with him a young shipmate, Gunner William J. Mudge, an orphan from Devonport. Gunner Mudge also lost his life.

They are remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial [12].

Arthur is also remembered on the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Stannary Congregational Church, Halifax, and on the Memorial at Crossley's Carpets

He does not appear in the UK Census of 1911, and was probably in Australia.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 59th Battalion Australian Infantry (Australian Imperial Forces).

He was killed in action [19th July 1916] (aged 33).

He was buried at the V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery & Memorial, Fromelles, France [17].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Trinity Road Baptist Church, Halifax

[1906-1944] Son of Arthur Richardson of Greetland.

Born in Greetland.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the Royal Naval Canteen Service aboard the sloop HMS Kite.

He died 21st August 1944 (aged 38)  when his ship was torpedoed by German Submarine U-344 and sank in the Barents Sea with the loss of 203 of her crew of 217.

He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial [80 1], and on the Memorial at Clay House, Greetland

In the mid-19th century, he worked at dyeing and finishing at Roubaix in Northern France.

In 1851, he obtained a patent for his dyeing apparatus.

He saw the industrial potential of Brookfoot with its constant supply of water offered by the Red Beck. In 1870, he founded the Brookfoot Dye Works with partners Mr Thompson and Samuel Naylor, and with his own son as manager.

He was a master dyer employing 133 men and 17 boys [1881].

In 1894, the business was sold to Mr Hannam and it became Thornton, Hannam & Marshall.

On 15th February 1853, he married Ellen, daughter of Joseph Richardson.

Baptised at Southowram [13th April 1804].

He was orphaned at the age of 10 and went to live with his uncle Samuel Freeman.

He was a weaver / day labourer / waggon driver

He was self-educated.

He became interested in nature, natural philosophy, science and astronomy. He studied under Michael Faraday.

Around 1830, he lived at High Field, Southowram and had an Observatory built there.

He gave lectures on optics, geology, astronomy, electricity, and other scientific topics. The Brontë family attended his lectures in Haworth.

He made steam gauges, thermometers, barometers and optical instruments, and his work was in demand over all the country.

He established William Richardson & Son.

He was a friend of William Cobbett.

He had an extensive collection of fossils from the carboniferous formations which was representative of the strata of the neighbourhood and included some unique specimens. On 23rd August 1865, a special meeting of the Bradford Philosophical Society considered purchasing the collection. Mr Parker of Manchester valued the collection on behalf of the society at £350. The society decided to make the purchase.

He was noted for his memory skills, and was able to recite passages of Shakespeare and other authors instantly.

In 1890, he married Margaret Ann Batty at Halifax Parish Church.

Born in Halifax.

He was a master dyer [1891] / a piece dyer's traveller [1901]

On 24th May 1883, he married Jessie, daughter of John Farrar of Southowram.

  3. Rosa [b 1887]

The family lived at Brookfoot House [1891, 1901].

Living with the family in 1901 was niece Gertrude, daughter of Samuel Johnson Oates
