Steanor Bottom Toll-House, Todmorden


The hexagonal 2-storey toll-house built 1824 on the busy Todmorden Turnpike – now the A6033 – across the Pennines between Todmorden and Littleborough and at the junction of the two roads.

The road superseded The Walsden Highway packhorse route.

When it was no longer required as a toll-house, it was occupied for some time. It was then derelict for a time. In 1972, it was badly damaged by a storm which dislodged the roof and part of the structure. There was a proposal to rebuild the house in the Castle Museum, York, but this did not happen and the house was restored in situ.

For every Horse or other Beast drawing any such, Berlin, Landau, Chariot, Chaise, Chair, Curricle, Calash, Hearse, Litter, or other such Carriage  the sum of 07
 

For every Horse or other Beast drawing any Waggon or other such four wheeled Carriage, or any Cart or other, such two-wheeled Carriage, with wheels of the breadth of six inches, on the Bottom or sole thereof  the sum of

For every Horse or other Beast drawing any Waggon, Train, Cart, or other such Carriage, with wheels of the breadth of four and a half inches, and less than six inches at the Bottom or sole thereof  the sum of

For every Horse or other Beast drawing any Waggon or other such four wheeled Carriage or any Cart or other such two-wheeled Carriage, with Wheels of the breadth of three inches or under four and a half on the Bottom or sole thereofthe sum of

N.B. The above Tolls to be taken for the first, fifth, and eighth time of passing repeatedly in one day, but not for repassing through the same: and Such Tolls not to be repayable more than three times in one day at the same Toll Gate
