[1896-1916] Born in Cragg Vale.

He was a twiner with Hinchliffe & Sons Limited.

He lived at Turvin Cottages, Mytholmroyd.

During World War I, he served as a Rifleman with the 2nd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps.

He died 20th August 1916 (aged 20).

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial [13A & 13B], on a memorial in St John in the Wilderness, Cragg Vale, and in the book Royd Regeneration.

Official notification of his death was received in July 1917

[1899-1963] He was licensee of the Prince of Wales, Salterhebble [1935, 1948, 1951] and licensee of the Old Crispin, Halifax [19??]

Sheard, J. S.
[18??-1918] Son of Ellis Sheard of 7 Clarendon Place, Ambler Thorn.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 9th Battalion King's (Liverpool Regiment).

He died of wounds [2nd September 1918].

He was buried at the St Martin Calvaire British Cemetery, St Martin-sur-Cojeul, France [II B 24].

His death was reported in the Halifax Courier [21st September 1918]

[1858-1930] Son of Schofield Crowther Sheard, mechanical engineer.

Born in Smethwick, Staffordshire.

He was a watch & clock maker of Lister Lane, Halifax [1891] / a clockmaker [1891] / a watchmaker [1901] / a watchmaker & jeweller [1911].

In [Q4] 1890, he married Nellie Witter [1865-19??] at Halifax Parish Church.


Nellie, of Green Royd, Skircoat, was born in Liverpool, the daughter of James Witter, commercial clerk

Son of James Schofield Sheard

He was a lithographer [1911] with Milnes printers, Gerrard Street.

In [Q1] 1915, he married Lilian Hall in Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [4th September 1914], and served as a Lance Sergeant with the 1st/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

His brother Harry was also serving.

He was wounded [June 1915] and recovered.

He was fatally wounded in the legs by a grenade whilst leading an attack at Ficheux, Somme [18th February 1917] (aged 21).

He was buried at the Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty [VI A 6]. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (posthumously).

He is remembered on the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Mary's Church, Halifax, on the Memorial at Park Congregational Church, and (possibly) on the Memorial at Holy Trinity Boys' School, Halifax

He was landlord of the Savile Arms, Elland [1834, 1841, 1845, 1851].

On 21st August 1824, he married Caroline Chadwick at Elland Parish Church.


Caroline was the daughter of Mr Chadwick

He was clerk and cashier in carpet manufacturing office [1851] / head cashier of John Crossley & Sons / carpet manufacturer [1871]. He established Sheard & Company

In 1853, he married Ruth Moorhouse [1809-1???] in Halifax.

They lived at Bramley Lane, Hipperholme [1871].

In 1851, he was living with sister Hannah and brother-in-law Samuel Bold Tillotson.

Living with them [in 1871] was Ruth's sister Ann Moorhouse [aged 64]

[1846-1???] In 1881, he was a farmer of 20 acres, and a stone merchant employing 13 men and 2 boys.

He lived at Southowram Workhouse [1881]

[18??-1918] DCM.

Son of Mrs Sheard of 4 Argyle Terrace, Baillie Street, Rochdale.

He was a member of Mixenden Independent Chapel & Choir / treasurer of the Sunday School / a watchmaker & jeweller / apprenticed to Mr Firth of Haley Hill / employed by Mr Williamson of Rochdale.

In [Q1] 1915, he married Florence Mann in Halifax.

They lived at 24 Tennyson Street, Lee Mount, Halifax.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 1st/6th Battalion Cheshire Regiment.

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal


for gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy shellfire on the battlefield
 

He was killed by an aerial bomb dropped from an enemy aircraft [16th February 1918].

He was buried at Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-le-Grand, France [IV B 20].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and (possibly) on the Memorial at Holy Trinity Boys' School, Halifax

Sheard, Jonathan
[1831-19??] Son of Matthew Sheard.

He was a brewer, a maltster [1871] / a brewer [1881, 1891, 1899]

He was in partnership with James Mansley.

On 28th February 1882, he was fined £2 8/6d for being drunk in charge of a pony and trap in Bull Green, Halifax on 22nd February. The trap went on to the causeway and narrowly missed smashing a shop window. He had been summoned several times previously.

In October 1871, Jonathan was living with his sister Nanny, her husband James Mansley [aged 34] (a common brewer and farmer) and their son Brook, at Brackenbed Brewery, Ovenden.

In 1871, he married (1) Annie / Hannah.


Annie / Hannah was the daughter of Thomas Whiteley gentleman, and widow of Mr Tatham.

Annie had a daughter by her first marriage: Ada [b 1868]

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 8th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.

He was killed on his second day at the Front [23rd April 1917].

He is remembered on the Arras Memorial [4 & 5], on the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Paul's Church, King Cross, and on the Memorial at Crossley & Porter School, Halifax

He was a farmer / brewer at Brook House Brewery, Mixenden.

On 18th April 1877, he married Hannah Horsfall [1851-1926] in Halifax.

His father died in 1891, and William was placed in the Crossley Orphanage, Halifax. By 1911, he had returned to the family home at 14 Summergate Place, Halifax.

He was a resident scholar [1901] / an education clerk [1911].

On 23rd January 1918, he married Hilda Davies [1888-19??] at St Paul's Church, King Cross.


Hilda was born in Nantwich
